AL: Sabathia throws a gem

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - CC Sabathia kept a no-hit bid going for 7 2-3 innings Saturday, losing the closest call of his career on a sharp single by former batterymate Kelly Shoppach in the New York Yankees' 10-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

There was no visible reaction from the exhausted Yankees ace, who sat in the dugout for 17 minutes while New York scored four runs in the top of the eighth.

Manager Joe Girardi immediately bounced out of the dugout to remove Sabathia (1-0), who walked two and struck out five. The left-hander threw 69 of his 111 pitches for strikes and benefited from spectacular defensive plays by Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano.

David Robertson pitched the final 1 1-3 innings to complete a combined two-hitter. Ben Zobrist doubled off the reliever with two outs in the ninth.

Cano hit a two-run homer off Wade Davis (0-1) in the fourth inning.

Red Sox 8, Royals 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jeremy Hermida and Jason Varitek homered on consecutive pitches from Zack Greinke and Boston went deep five times in a victory over the Royals.

Varitek added a second homer and Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia also connected for the Red Sox, helping Josh Beckett to remain unbeaten against Kansas City.

Beckett (1-0), in his first game since signing a four-year, $68 million contract extension, allowed three runs and nine hits in seven innings. He beat the Royals for the fifth straight start.

Greinke (0-1) had a 1-0 lead after four but Hermida hit a 1-1 pitch leading off the fifth for his first home run. Varitek then slammed Greinke's next delivery into the Royals bullpen, marking the first time in Greinke's career the right-hander had allowed home runs on consecutive pitches.

Mariners 4, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Franklin Gutierrez drove in the go-ahead run to cap a three-run ninth inning against Frank Francisco (0-2), who blew his second save opportunity in three days, allowing three runs and three hits while retiring only one batter.

Ichiro Suzuki, Ken Griffey Jr. and Gutierrez had consecutive RBI singles in the ninth for Seattle.

Mark Lowe (1-1) walked two in a scoreless eighth, and David Aardsma worked the ninth for his second save.

Twins 2, White Sox 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jason Kubel hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning and Scott Baker pitched seven sharp innings, leading Minnesota over the White Sox.

Jesse Crain got two outs in the eighth and stranded Mark Teahen at second, and Jon Rauch pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save.

Baker (1-1) rebounded after struggling through only 4 2-3 innings on opening day. On Saturday, he allowed one run on five hits. He struck out three and walked one.

In his first start of the season, Freddy Garcia (0-1) made one mistake, to Kubel. He allowed just two runs on three hits. He struck out four and walked five.

Tigers 4, Indians 2

DETROIT (AP) - Jeremy Bonderman gave up one hit in five innings and Magglio Ordonez had a two-run homer for the Tigers.

Bonderman (1-0) retired the first 11 he faced, then allowed a run on a wild pitch, single and two walks. The right-hander started for the first time at home in nearly two years since having surgery to break up a blood clot in his throwing shoulder.

Ryan Perry pitched the final 1 1-3 innings for his first career save.

Mitch Talbot (0-1) allowed four runs, six hits and five walks over five innings in his debut with the Indians and fourth game in the majors.

Blue Jays 3, Orioles 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Dana Eveland pitched brilliantly into the eighth inning in his Toronto debut, and the Blue Jays got two RBIs from No. 9 hitter Jose Molina.

Edwin Encarnacion had two hits and scored twice for the Blue Jays, who have won four straight. Toronto is already 2-0 at Camden Yards after going 1-8 in 2009.

Eveland (1-0) allowed five hits in 7 1-3 innings, walking two and striking out two.

Baltimore starter David Hernandez (0-1) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings. The Orioles have lost Hernandez's last 10 starts since Aug. 11, 2009.

Angels 4, Athletics 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Hideki Matsui singled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning, giving Los Angeles a victory over Oakland.

The three-time defending AL West champs avoided what would have been their first 1-5 start since their inaugural 1961 season. They had given up 10 runs in each of the previous two games.

Bobby Abreu started the winning rally with the Angels' sixth double of the game. Craig Breslow (0-1) intentionally walked Torii Hunter, then fell behind Matsui 2-0 before last year's World Series MVP lined the next pitch just inside the right-field line for his first game-ending hit with the Angels.

Fernando Rodney (1-0) got the win with an inning of perfect relief.

Angels starter Jered Weaver allowed four hits in six innings, struck out seven and left with a 3-1 lead.
