DAYTON - Last spring, after receiving more than 16,000 signatures of support, Lyon County Commissioners granted 2.6 acres of park land near Como Park and Dayton Elementary School for the development of the Dayton Valley Dog Park.
Since then, the developing dog park has been adopted as a primary program of the Dayton Valley Lions Club. The club's goal is to assist in implementing a safe and attractive area for residents to take their dogs.
A 5K and 2K walk/run will kick off a women's eight-week fitness challenge that will also benefit the dog park.
The walk/run will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday, May 16 at Starbucks on Highway 50 East near Smith's Grocery. The Nevada State Health Division is providing goodie bags and T-shirts for all participants. In addition, the DVDP group is accepting canned dog food, and awarding a prize to the person who raises the most money for the dog park. Adults can register for the walk/run for $20, while children under 12 can register for $8.
