Two steps back for Carson against Reed

Coach Cody Farnworth said it was "two steps back" for the Carson baseball team Wednesday evening, after the Senators lost to the Reed Raiders, 14-4.

"I don't think we came out ready to play," Farnworth said. "I don't think the intensity was there ... we went back to making the same mistakes we had been making in the past."

The loss comes after a 12-2 win over Sparks on Tuesday and a 3-0 win over North Valleys on Monday. The Senators are now 7-11 overall and 4-8 in the Sierra League. Carson plays a series with Spanish Springs starting April 22.

"We can beat them, we can play them, but we have to play better than we did tonight," Farnworth said.

With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the third inning, Carson ace David Charles surrendered three runs topped off by a double to centerfield by Reed's Anthony Silva.

But Carson came back in the bottom of the third, matching the Raiders' three runs starting with a hit to deep right by Adam Whitt, loading the bases. Brock Pradere hit a single, giving Colby Blueberg a green light to score. Connor Beattie and Nick Domitrovich were both walked, scoring both Blake Plattsmier and Whitt.

But with the score tied at 4, the Raiders began to dominate in the fourth inning after Charles walked three batters, resulting in two runs.

Carson changed pitchers mid-way through the fourth inning, exchanging Charles, who had seven strikeouts, with Drew Moreland.

Moreland surrendered a sacrifice fly to deep center field, which was caught by Dylan Sawyers, but the play resulted in two Reed players scoring.

Down 8-4, Carson couldn't answer Reeds' rally, giving up another three runs to the Raiders in the fifth after two singles and a dropped fly ball in left field.

With the bases loaded, the Raiders scored three runs after a hit to deep right field by Roberto Velazquez. In the sixth, Reed's Derek Garcia hit a three-run home run to give the Raiders a 10-run margin.

Carson tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth, getting two men on base before ending the inning after two strikeouts and a groundout.

JV BASEBALL

CARSON TOPS REED

Charlie Banfield pitched a complete game leading the Carson JV baseball team to a 4-2 victory over Reed on Wednesday at the Manogue Tournament.

Banfield gave up six hits while striking out three for the Senators.

Offensively, Luke Maher was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Daniel Okimura added a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI.

Carson is 13-6 overall heading into the third place game of the tournament, at 1 p.m. today.
