The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
Silver dollar: To Carson City Soroptimists, for being fairy godmothers to dozens of local girls who can't afford prom dresses. Soroptimists, through Operation Fairy Godmother, are collecting new or gently used dresses for girls to wear to Carson High School's prom on May 8. Every girl deserves to feel like a princess at prom, and this effort will go a long way toward making those dreams come true. Donations can be dropped off by April 30 at Body and Soul, 205 E. John St., Sugar Pine Cove, 1910 College Parkway, or Salon Chocolat, 177 W. Proctor St.
Wooden Nickel: To the Fedora Bandit, who robbed a Bank of the West branch in Carson City this week at gunpoint. This is the fifth strike for the fake-bearded robber, in Grass Valley, Kings Beach, South Lake Tahoe and now Carson City. We'll throw in another wooden nickel for Bank of the West, which is offering $2,500 for information leading to an arrest. Come on, BotW, this man has put your employees and customers at risk. Someone out there suspects who he is. Up the reward to something that will get them to pick up the phone and drop a dime on the crook.
Silver Dollar: To the hundreds of Nevada residents who peacefully gathered to show their disapproval of government spending on tax day, as well as the counter-protesters. Peaceful protest and advocating change through the ballot box is a big part of what makes this country great.
