The Truckee Trails Foundation is gearing up for summer with trail maintenance, education and advocacy programs for trail users in the region.
Spring cleaning on the Truckee River Legacy Trail is planned for May 1. The trail has accumulated a lot of sand and pine needles that need to be removed for safety.
A big shift for the foundation this year will be moving away from one big day of trail maintenance - Truckee Trails Day - to work days throughout the summer.
Truckee Trails Foundation will continue work on extending the Legacy Trail - which now stretches from the Truckee Regional Park through Riverview Sports Park - with the ultimate goal of taking it from the east end of Donner Lake all the way to Glenshire.
The group is also trying out new ways to fund their efforts in a down economy.
"We continue to have a great base of support from our members - we have a lot of trail lovers here," Pedley said.
But when it comes to grant writing, she said it's tough to compete - or want to compete, with nonprofits in the health and human services side of things.
That's where a new credit card program comes in - Capital One allows nonprofits like the Truckee Trails Foundation to create a custom credit card, Pedley said.
When people sign up, Capital One donates $50 to the foundation. The foundation also gets a percentage of credit card user's spending.
