A Carson City resident has registered as a high-risk sex offender with the Sheriff's Office.

Detective Bob Motamen-pour said William Sears Jr., 45, was convicted in Carson City of battery with intent to commit sexual assault in 1984.

Sears, who has lived in Carson City for many years, was recently reassigned by the state as a Tier 3 offender. Tier 3 sex offenders are deemed as having the highest risk of reoffending. Nevada law requires law enforcement agencies to notify the community when a Tier 3 offender moves to town.

Motamenpour was uncertain what prompted the new designation.

Sears lives in the 3700 block of Reeves Street.

"This notification is not intended to increase fear but rather to increase awareness," the sex offender notification flier from the Carson City Sheriff's Office reads. "This person is not wanted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office. Citizen abuse of this information, such as threats, intimidation, harassment or any act of recrimination, is unlawful and is subject to prosecution."

If you have information regarding suspicious activity by this or any other offender, call the Carson City Sheriff's Communication Center at 887-2008 or Motamenpour at 887-2020 ext. 41406.

Currently, Sears is the only Tier 3 offender living in Carson City.
