The Carson City First United Methodist Church will hold a pizza night at 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the new Straw Hat Pizza location, 2010 Highway 50 East (near Sak 'n' Save).

Proceeds from pizza sales, both in-store and carry out, will benefit the church's Guatemala mission. Residents of Carson City are invited to assist in this mission by buying a pizza and by telling their friends and neighbors.

Church members began assisting with medical missions to Guatemala in 2007. This year, they will lead a service mission to La Union, an impoverished rural Guatemalan village, to improve basic health conditions and educational opportunities. Many suffer intestinal diseases from contaminated water and many children suffer from chronic malnutrition.

The mission's purpose is to foster an ongoing relationship with residents and provide water purification filters to minimize water-borne illness. The group also plans to repair the school roof and perform other general repairs to La Union's school buildings. Some members will also participate in a two-day medical clinic.
