TORONTO (AP) - Jason Varitek had four RBIs, Marco Scutaro scored a career-high four runs and Boston held off Toronto for a wild, 13-12 win Monday night.

Varitek went 3 for 5 with two two-run singles and Scutaro went 3 for 5 with a walk against his former team, which set a season high in runs, and with 18 hits.

Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer and Lyle Overbay, former Nevada Wolf Pack player, went 3 for 5 with a solo homer and four RBIs.

Scott Schoeneweis (1-0) got one out for the win and Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his sixth save, ending the game after 4 hours, 3 minutes - the longest nine-inning game of the season, according to Stats, LLC.

Shawn Camp (1-1) allowed three runs and four hits in 1 2-3 innings.

Josh Beckett, who had a 6.62 ERA in 12 career starts against Toronto, allowed eight runs and nine hits in three-plus innings, while Toronto's Dana Eveland allowed seven runs and eight hits in three-plus innings.

Tigers 8, Rangers 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Miguel Cabrera and Brandon Inge hit back-to-back homers in the ninth for Detroit, which blew a five-run lead.

Cabrera's tiebreaking homer off Neftali Feliz (1-1) landed in the Texas bullpen in right-center. Inge followed with his second homer of the game.

Inge's two-run shot in the fifth, his first of the season, put Detroit up 6-1.

Phil Coke (3-0), the third Tigers pitcher, worked 1 2-3 shutout innings before Jose Valverde pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save in seven chances.

Coke took over with one out in the seventh after the Rangers had loaded the bases off Joel Zumaya. The left-hander struck out Josh Hamilton on three pitches before giving up a two-run single to Vladimir Guerrero that that tied it at 6.

Detroit led 4-0 after the first four batters of the game reached and scored off Matt Harrison.

Royals 3, Mariners 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kyle Davies allowed only one infield single in six dominant innings and Kansas City handed Felix Hernandez his first loss in 10 decisions.

Billy Butler homered leading off the seventh against Hernandez (2-1), who had won nine consecutive decisions since losing to Cleveland last Aug. 23. In seven innings, he gave up three runs - two earned - with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Davies (2-1) walked three and struck out five before turning a 2-0 lead over to the bullpen starting the seventh.

Kansas City's much-maligned bullpen preserved the shutout until former Royal Mike Sweeney's pinch-hit RBI single off Kyle Farnsworth with two outs in the ninth. Bruce Chen came in and got his first career save when Ichiro Suzuki flied out.
