(AP) - The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is accepting public comments on a proposal to remove 1,000 wild horses from three areas in northeast Nevada.
The agency says the planned gather would begin in July and leave about 440 animals in the Owyhee, Rock Creek and Little Humboldt herd management areas about 90 miles northwest of Elko.
Comments must be submitted by May 21.
BLM officials says too many horses are threatening native wildlife and range habitat.
Earlier this year the BLM rounded up nearly 2,000 horses from the Calico Mountains Complex north of Reno. Eighty-six horses died either during the gather or while at a government holding corral.
