Southwest life shown through artist's work

Santiago Chavez will be the featured artist at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery which is located at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

With a New Mexico background to his art, he brings the southwest to life in his work. For anyone interested in unique art work this is your guy. Chavez also will present special art and his poetry at a show in the BAC theater on May 5 with food and music. Admission is free.

Container gardening workshop in V.C.

The Comstock Gardeners and Growers, a program of Community Chest, Inc. in Storey County, is holding a spring workshop on container gardening. The workshop will take place from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Storey County Senior Center.

Join the growers for a breakfast of frittata with farm fresh eggs and locally-grown veggies, fresh baked breads and fruit compote.

There will be seedlings for sale and orders will be taken for container garden boxes. Learn tips for growing summer produce as a square foot gardener - whether you live in a small space, are a novice gardener, or just want to spruce up your summer meals with some colorful, fresh and flavorful veggies.

20-30 club hosts new membership party

The Active 20-30 Club of Carson City is seeking young professionals between the ages of 20 and 39 who are interested in service through volunteerism.

The club is hosting a membership drive 8-10 p.m. Friday at Jimmy G's Cigar Bar, 311 N. Carson St. DJ C Styles will be playing '80s music; vintage dress is encouraged.

The Active 20-30 clubs of Nevada boast a long history of serving communities through activities with children and fundraising efforts to benefit local kids.

McDonald's helping local schools

Northern Nevada McDonald's will team up with several local schools for "McTeacher's Night" from 4-8 p.m. today. This event gives Northern Nevada schools the chance to raise funds for programs, equipment or other special projects when teachers spend the evening working at McDonald's.

Participating schools and area McDonald's include:

St. Teresa of Avila and Bethlehem Lutheran teachers at McDonald's, 2001N. Carson St., Carson City.

Bordewich-Bray and Fritsch elementary schools at McDonald's at 1666 U.S. Highway 395, Minden.

Seeglier Elementary at McDonald's, 3905 South Carson St.

As part of the fun, local school teachers and administrators will be working behind the counter. A portion of the total sales from the event will go to Northern Nevada schools.

Ballroom dance class slated in Genoa

A new 12-week class in ballroom dance will start up May 2 at the Genoa Town Hall.

Larry Ward, with 55 years experience in dance, will instruct the class. Sign-ups will be taken at the first two classes on May 5 and May 16 (no class on Mother's Day May 9).

CAMPO changes regular meeting time

A new start time of 4:30 p.m. will be effective at the next Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting on May 12.

This will be a permanent change. The meeting format and location will remain the same, and the Regional Transportation Commission meeting still will begin immediately following the adjournment of the CAMPO meeting.

Additionally, CAMPO and RTC will continue to meet on the second Wednesday of each month unless otherwise noted. The new time change will be noted on the agendas that will go out next week for the May 12 meeting.

The Capital City Democrats will meet at 7 p.m. May 5 in the AFSCME Building, 709 East Robinson St. 

The public is invited to participate in discussions and questions with candidates, and/or for representatives as to their qualifications for office.
