(AP) - A legislative panel has agreed to spend $8 million in state funds to buy 460 acres of property for a future Nevada National Guard readiness center.
The property is at the Fire Science Academy near Carlin in Elko County.
The $8 million is contingent on federal National Guard officials agreeing to spend another $8 million in federal funds on the readiness center in Carlin.
The Legislature's Interim Finance Committee approved the spending Thursday.
The University of Nevada, Reno owns and operates the Fire Science Academy, which has struggled for years due to debt.
Nevada Adjutant General William Burks says the goal is to allow the academy to maintain operations.
