RENO - Despite getting a complete-game effort out of junior righty Kameron Van
Winkle, the Douglas High baseball team opened a crucial league series against Sierra League-leading Galena with a 5-2 loss Thursday afternoon.
Galena senior Eric Howsley kept the Tiger bats at bay throughout, limiting Douglas to just two runs.
Douglas got on the board in the third inning when Ryan Ford doubled and junior Matt Thomas singled him home. The Tigers scratched one more run across in the seventh when Brett Anderson singled, Shane Fencl was hit by a pitch and Van Winkle hit an RBI double.
The teams meet up for a doubleheader in Minden on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
SOFTBALL
TIGERS RALLY TO WIN
RENO - The Douglas softball team used a seven-run fifth to come back for a 10-8 win Thursday afternoon.
After giving up five runs in the first, the Tigers chipped away at the Grizzlies' lead until the decisive fifth.
Emily Weaver and Maddy Gilbert started the inning with singles and Katrina Morgan walked to load the bases. Morgan Blomstrom singled to score Weaver and Gilbert, and Brenna White reached on an error to score Morgan. Naomi Roberts singled to bring Blomstrom home. Nikki Chavez then singled and Weaver came back up with a single to score White and Aliyah Paxson, who was running for Roberts. Chavez capped the inning by stealing home on a fake steal attempt by Weaver.
Weaver, Chavez and Blomstrom each had two RBIs in the game. Freshman Taylor McKinnon picked up the win in relief for the Tigers .
Douglas improved to 13-3 in league play and 19-6 overall with the win. The two teams will meet up in a doubleheader at 10 a.m. Saturday in Minden.
JV BASEBALL
SENATORS FALL IN 7TH
The Carson JV baseball team held onto a 1-0 lead until Bishop Manogue was able to win the game in the seventh inning Thursday.
The Senators took the lead in the third inning when Danny Okimura tripled home a run. He was 3-for-3 on the day. Carter Nuckolls was 2-for-3 with a double for Carson. Zakary Harjes was the tough-luck loser pitching a complete game. He allowed only three hits while striking out five and walking three, one intentionally.
The Senators fell to 16-8 overall and 11-5 in the league. The teams meet for doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carson High.
