Police Academy to graduate 16th class of peace officers

A new group of law enforcement professionals is ready to serve communities in western Nevada.

Twenty-four cadets will graduate from the Western Nevada State Peace Officer Academy during a ceremony 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at Western Nevada College's Carson City campus.

Captain Frank Shyne of the Fallon Police Department will be the keynote speaker.

Graduates include:

Top performing cadets will be honored at the ceremony. Jake Meddles receives Top Gun honors for obtaining the highest scores in practical and written testing for the emergency vehicle operator course. He also earns the Physical Fitness Award for performing at the top of his class in physical training exercises.

Travis Hughes graduates as Top Gun for achieving the highest practical and written test scores. James LaChew is recognized as the most successful cadet in the Sharp Shooter Competition, outlasting his peers in a series of complex time target shooting.

Silverio Mendoza receives the Marksmanship Award for firing all shots within a finite target area during qualifying tests.

Free family workshops in Spanish

Latino families can explore the importance of education, personal development and positive relationships through a series of workshops 5-8 p.m. on Fridays Aug. 6-Sept, 18 at WNC in the Bristlecone Building, room 344.

The first workshop, "Encounter with Oneself," meets Friday and focuses on reasons to discover intellectual, creative and person life capabilities. "Leadership for Life" meets Aug. 14 and helps participants develop ownership of their decisions, goals and training in order to set a good example for their children.

Music technology lab opens thanks to fee

WNC students will be able to learn how to write, edit and program music this fall, thanks to the fee WNC students pay to enhance technology at the college. A music technology course is being offered at the WNC Carson City campus for the first time in several years.

The two-credit university transfer course is offered 12-12:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Professional performer/

arranger John Shipley teaches the class.

The course will be taught in the college's Clavinova piano laboratory. Interested students should enroll on the WNC website at www.wnc.edu.

A variety of other music classes are available this fall at WNC, including History of Rock Music and Jazz Appreciation.

Carnival to benefit child development

Summer is almost over, but the fun is just beginning. The WNC Child Development Center on the Carson City campus hosts a carnival 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday.

Children can play games, enjoy face painting and win prizes. Food, drinks, bake sale items and popcorn will be available for purchase. Cost is $5.

Proceeds benefit the center, which provides child care to children of WNC students, as well as community members. For more information, call 445-4265.
