State gets cancer screening grant

(Nevada Appeal Capitol Bureau) - The state health division has been awarded a five year, $600,000 federal grant to enhance colorectal cancer screening programs.

"Our goal is to provide this important, often lifesaving screening to those that most likely need it," said division Administrator Richard Whitley.

He said two-thirds of the money will go to screening for people aged 50 and above, the population most at risk for colorectal cancer. The remaining money will be aimed at the uninsured and minority populations in Nevada.

'Happy Senior Tours' to travel to Boomtown

The Carson City Senior Center's "Happy Senior Tours" group will travel to Boomtown Aug. 10.

The bus will load at 7:45 a.m. in the east parking lot of the senior center, and will depart at 8:15 a.m. sharp. It will return to the center at 4 p.m.

Spotlight on health centers in U.S.

Congressman Dean Heller will visit Sierra Family Health Center to support health care for the uninsured during National Health Center Week next week.

People seeking affordable health care in Carson City can come to Sierra Family Health Center at

10 a.m. Monday at 907 N. Mountain St.

Mayor Bob Crowell and Patricia Durbin from Great Basin Primary Care Associ-ations also will be in attendance along with others.

The week focuses the public spotlight on America's health centers and their work to make sure everyone who needs health care can find it.

Staples to give teachers free supplies

Staples is making it easy for teachers to have the tools they need to do their job by hosting a Teacher Appreciation Day at store locations across the country.

Teacher Appreciation Day will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Carson City Staples store located at 915 Jacks Valley Road.

The first 100 teachers visiting Staples stores on Teacher Appreciation Day will receive an Avery Binder filled with paper, a pencil pouch and supplies. Teachers also will have the opportunity to preview new products and services at Staples. New this year, Staples is offering teachers a special Copy & Print promotion throughout the back-to-school season of 5-cent black-and-white copies of classroom materials.

Jazz! Carson City Music Festival opens Sunday

The Jazz! Carson City 2010 music festival opens 4-8 p.m. Sunday with three free concerts at the Legislative Plaza/Capitol Amphitheater. Bring a picnic and blanket and enjoy the music.

At 4 p.m., The STRAZZ ensemble will get your toes tapping with an hour of jazz and fiddle tunes played by a dozen of Northern Nevada's top strings students.

Two Plus, featuring Tom Styker, jazz harmonica, and Dan Lancaster, sax, clarinet, and flute, will be joined by David Bugli, keyboard, Chuck DeLaura, bass, and Herbie Weihskopf, drums, for an hour of traditional improvisational jazz.

Top off the afternoon with the inimitable humor and musicianship of "Speedy" Garfin and the Garfin Gathering, from 6-8 p.m. Garfin Gathering musicians are "Speedy" Garfin, sax, clarinet, flute, conga drums, and vocals; Kerry Shacklett, keyboard; George Stigliano, drums; and Jakki Ford, vocals and choreography.

Lend a paw at animal shelter

The Chamber Leadership Class of 2010 is looking for volunteers to help build, paint, clean, and repair the Carson City Animal Shelter. Volunteers are needed, and donations are appreciated.

The Leadership Carson City Class is selling raffle tickets for a beautiful handmade quilt/wall hanging to raise money for this project. Tickets are $3 each or five for $12.

Or come to the Chamber's Breakfast Club to see the quilt and purchase your tickets directly from class members. The winning ticket will be drawn at the reveal of the project in September. They will mail the quilt if the winner lives out of the area.

Vendors needed for cantaloupe festival

The newly organized Fallon Festival Association, Inc. is busy planning for the 2010 Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe Festival to be held Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-6, at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

Apply for 4-H shooting sports match

Nevada 4-H is accepting applications for the 2010 Nevada State 4-H Shooting Sports Match Sept. 18 in Carson City.

The daylong event starts at 7 a.m. at the Capitol City Gun Club and ends with a

7 p.m. awards ceremony at the Carson City Community Center on William Street. Lunch will be served at the Carson Rifle Range.

Contest entry forms and application fees are due at the Nevada State 4-H office no later than Aug. 13.

Members of organized, collegiate or military teams are not eligible.
