Vendors needed for cantaloupe festival

The newly organized Fallon Festival Association, Inc. is busy planning for the 2010 Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe Festival to be held Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-6, at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

Vendors of all types - food, craft and commercial - are encouraged to fill out an application for booth space. Applications can be requested by e-mailing to dimitrahowell@yahoo.com or calling DeeDee Howell at 775-427-4076.

Apply for 4-H shooting sports match

Nevada 4-H is accepting applications for the 2010 Nevada State 4-H Shooting Sports Match Sept. 18 in Carson City.

The daylong event starts at 7 a.m. at the Capitol City Gun Club and ends with a

7 p.m. awards ceremony at the Carson City Community Center on William Street. Lunch will be served at the Carson Rifle Range.

Contest entry forms and application fees are due at the Nevada State 4-H office no later than Aug. 13.

Members of organized, collegiate or military teams are not eligible.

Hunter safety class offered in Douglas

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office will host a hunter safety class on Aug. 17 and 18.

The class runs from 5 to 9 p.m. both days and will be the only such class hosted by the sheriff's office until Spring 2011.

The hunter safety class is limited to 30 students per class and pre-registration is required.

Register online at NDOW.org and click on learn and participate/hunter ed class. If you do not have access to the website, call the sheriff's administration office at 782-9900 during regular working hours.

The completion of a work book in mandatory prior to the class; the work book can be obtained at the sheriff's office or purchased online.

The cost of the course is $5 unless the participant is under 18; registration fees for those under 18 years of age will be paid for by the Carson Valley Chukar Club.
