Supervisors, Californians in cahoots over city center

I am amazed at the actions of the Carson City Board of Supervisors. To begin with, the board listened to a couple of Californians who felt we didn't have a proper city center. In all their collective wisdom, the board decided to create the Nugget Project which will be our new city center.

The board decided this without a public vote. Now, I understand the group has hired a contractor from California to do the planning of the project. You would think these people would look around, see how desperate for work Nevadans have become, and award the planning to a Nevadan.

Perhaps the board, the two Californians who recommended the project, and the hired planner should all go back to California where they would all be happier.

I have lived in Carson City for 30 years, and I have never seen such a betrayal to the public.

Founders separated church, state for reason

Terrific. Sharron Angle claims she has a calling from her god. I can't help but think of Haggard, Swaggert, Craig, Foley, Vitter and tons more who claimed similar visions while spouting the word. Scary stuff.

In Angle's skewed view of reality, evidently it's her god's calling that little 12-year-old Sarah, who was brutally raped and impregnated by good ol' Uncle Charley, must carry that poisonous seed to term. Absolute insane logic.

But there's more. It's her same god's calling to deny certain rights of our gay and lesbian citizens, and to deny the rights of those who wish to choose a dignified death over a painful demise. And the same calling to ban stem cell research because life begins in a petri dish. So why not bring back stoning because I picked up sticks on Sunday?

There was a reason our founding fathers left God out of the Constitution. Because when God or any other deity shows up with their staunch believers of talking snakes and vestal virgins, the inalienable rights of man so enumerated in that Constitution become an endangered species.

Take a good look at our planet. Whenever religion dominates the political process, prejudice, hatred and often violence run roughshod over those rights.

Not in my country. I'll take separation of church and state, thank you very much. Angle's angle is just too extreme.

Thanks to all who rallied after house fire

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our neighbors for the great moral support they gave my wife and I when a tragic fire broke out at our house.

Because of the immediate response of the fire department, our house was saved from being completely burned down. The fire chief, Red Cross workers and paramedics were there to care for our physical needs.

Most of all, though, the love and compassion of our neighbor was something to be admired. We were given coffee and orange juice and toast to take care of our bodies, but the great love and concern our neighbors gave us was food for the soul.

Our insurance company was immediately notified, and gave us money for food and supplies and lodging until our house is repaired.

My wife and I will never forget the compassion of all those who were involved in our recovery from this tragic accident.

Candidates, what will you do for Carson City?

In case some people in Carson are not aware of the fact, we are going to have an election in November.

We would like to know what the people who are running for office are planning to do if they are elected, what their opinions are on the key issues and how they plan to achieve those goals. This would be helpful for the voters to know.

I personally do not care if they like or don't like their opponents. We do not need all the mud-slinging, all the distortions of the facts and the half truths that are designed by one of the candidates to scare the voters so that they will not vote for the other. This is wrong for any candidate, especially for the ones who are running for offices in the Senate. Those are the people who will be voting for us and making decisions for the entire country.

Our own elections in Carson City are not quite as bad, but it would be nice to know some of the positions these wannabees have. For instance, what are the plans for taking care of the gang problems here in town? Also, what are they planning to do about the illegals who are demanding their rights? What rights? They are not here legally so they have no rights here in the United States.

We want Carson City to be a nice place to live, with law-abiding citizens, a friendly town for families to enjoy without worry.
