130 YEARS AGO

Doc Benton is still off on a trip to Falling Leaf Lake. His characteristic poetry, wrapped in brown paper used for bait says: I started out from Yank's ... And fished upon the banks ... of cool and furling streams; Meanwhile the big black ants ... Came crawling up my pants ... And nestled in the seams ... (and the last stanza) Though base-born thieves may steal ... My lines and pole and reel, I still along the lake's green bank shall rove ... and yarns I still will stretch ... About the fish I catch ... While drying clothes beside the kitchen stove.

100 YEARS AGO

A letter has been received from Charles H. Stone, a Carson boy in Seoul, S. Korea. Stone states that while in Kobe, Japan, he was treated better than anywhere and had the opportunity to be the umpire at a game of baseball. While in Korea, Stone expects to be the King of Korea's driver. The car he owns resides in a barn and has yet to be driven. It is an electric car. "When I look out over the city and watch the movements of this strangely interesting people, in their fantastic dress, and view the mainly strange scenes, I realize that I am, indeed in a strange land. Signed, your loving son, Charles H. Stone."

70 YEARS AGO

The Western Drilling Company has finished up another clear, cool well at the Prison. The well at the orphans home is doing better than expected. The well at the prison farm is set at 230 feet and furnishing about 1,500 gallons per minute.

50 YEARS AGO

The Carson City Little league All-Stars, after defeating defending state champion Elko in the opening round, (were) 7-1 to Reno national in semi-final state tournament play at Hawthorne.

20 YEARS AGO

A 1,300-acre tax exemption for Reno explorer Gene Savoy for an open-air church north of Reno has been scaled back extensively to 146 acres by the State Supreme Court.

10 YEARS AGO

Frank Sharp, candidate for ward 4 supervisor, calls for the addition of two more sheriff's deputies per year. He also called for the expansion of the retail sales base in Carson. Sharp faced Richard Staub and Vern Horton.
