The weather cooperated by sending a pleasant breeze to cool off participants at Carson City Harley-Davidson's Bike Fest Saturday.

"We estimate we've had 500-600 people so far, and we're expecting an even bigger crowd this evening for the UFC we're showing on the big screen inside," said motorcycle sales representative Pov San. "It's going to be a big party."

Daryl and Jan Schaar, of Carson City, brought their 1949 Chevy Custom Fleetline to dazzle classic car lovers.

"We like the local shows and we like the local people," said Daryl Schaar. "I've been here 37 years, and there is a lot of stuff going on in Reno this weekend, but we want to support our local folks."

Jan Schaar said her husband did the paint, interior, body and metal work on the car.

"It's a completely homegrown vehicle, and we're very proud of this," she said. "It has taken best of show in several events since Memorial Day."

Daryl Schaar said he bought the car at Hot August Nights four years ago and has been working on it for three years.

He described the colors as silver metal-flake, red metal-flake and candy red pearl.

"It's my art," he said. "It's rolling art to me."

Also showing off their rides Saturday were Vic and Karon Martin of Dayton.

Their 1937 lemon-yellow Ford coupe is going to be repainted at some point, Vic Martin said, along with a few upgrades like a new hood, new flooring, power steering and air conditioning. He doesn't plan to mess with too much more.

"It runs so sweet and pretty right now, so I figure, if it ain't broke, don't fix it," he said.

They were also proud of their 1954 Chevy half-ton, five-window truck, which he called "a work in progress."

One of the Martin's sons, Mike Martin said he was particularly fond of the truck.

"It has been in the family since it was brand new; that's why I like to drive that one," he said.

Demonstrating their polished motorcycle-riding skills Saturday were Carson City Dep. Sal Acosta, Sgt. Mike Cullen and Dep. Steve Olson.

"We train for competitions here. We set up our cones and do patterns once a month. They see how we train, and they asked us to come out here and do some patterns and grind some boards," Acosta said.

"Training and exhibition make us better riders so we can be safer on the road," he said.

San said based on the Bike Fest turnout, they will probably host another event next year to coincide with Hot August Nights.
