Nearly 500 people came to the Day of Compassion at the plaza hotel on Saturday for free clothing and groceries.

It was the third annual event hosted by the Well of Worship Christian church based in Mound House. Organizers said the event this year attracted about twice as many than it did last year.

Those who came were offered a catered lunch, bags of non-perishable groceries and donated clothing, which was collected by Capital Ford.

About 300 bags of food were given away. Pastor Cary Dyer said all of the donated clothing couldn't fit inside a 47-foot-long trailer.

The event also featured face painting and a bounce house for children.
