Man dies following Mound House fender bender

MOUND HOUSE - A man involved in a minor accident in Mound House this morning was pronounced dead at the scene possibly from an preexisting medical condition, according to officials.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen said the victim was eastbound in a 1989 Chevy Caprice on Highway 50 East when he clipped the rear of a Audi sedan driven by Reynaldo Olivas, 57, of Mound House.

Olivas told officers the Chevy was traveling a "high rate of speed" in the slow lane and when Olivas tried to get out of the way, the Chevy brushed his left rear bumper just after 10 a.m.

The damage was minimal.

The Chevy then jumped the curb and traveled several hundred feet before stopping in the sagebrush on the south side of highway just east of the NV50 Club.

When paramedics arrived, 66-year-old man from Silver City, was in cardiac arrest. Crews worked for a half hour to revive him but were unable. He was pronounced dead at 10:42 a.m., said Trooper Chris Austin. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Austin said the man sustained no visible injuries.
