An Arizona truck driver was jailed Monday night after he allegedly reported he'd been robbed of cash at gunpoint by two black men, only later to confess he had "lost" the money entrusted to him by his trucking company, according to a police report.
Rafael Reza, 38, of Phoenix, was booked into the Carson City Jail at 12:06 p.m. Monday on suspicion of misdemeanor false report of a crime.
According to the arrest report, Reza called 911 about 9:30 p.m. to report two black men in a Honda Accord with California plates confronted him as he walked from the North Carson Street Burger King where he had used the bathroom to JM Furniture where his truck was parked with a delivery.
Reza allegedly stated the men put a gun to his temple, ordered him to his knees and took $1,300 belonging to Corsicana Bedding Company, for whom Reza works.
In confirming Reza's story, a deputy went to Burger King and Save Mart nearby to show employees a picture of Reza. While the Burger King employees didn't recognize Reza, an employee at Save Mart reported being 90 percent sure Reza was in the grocery store gambling, the report states.
Despite the discrepancies, deputies continued to search the city for the alleged gunmen for several hours, while an investigator questioned Reza at length, the report states.
At about midnight, Reza allegedly confessed he had "lost" the money in Placerville and he had made up the story about being robbed because it was the second time he had lost the company's money.
His bail was set at $632.
