(Nevada Appeal Capitol Bureau) - Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has announced grant awards to Nevada including funding for work on Highway 50 in Douglas County.

The realignment project on Highway 50 will receive $1 million out of the $8 million in transportation funding.

The two biggest awards on the list are in Clark County: $3.3 million for an airport interchange and $2.2 million to widen the highway between Las Vegas and Pahrump.

The Pyramid Highway corridor will get $1.1 million for improvements and $500,000 will go to upgrade the state's Traffic Safety Information System.

In addition, Reid announced Nevada will receive $1 million under the Affordable Care Act to help protect residents from unfair insurance premium increases.

He said premiums have risen twice as fast as inflation.

The money will help the state review insurance rates, pass laws improving transparency in rate filings and pursue legislative authority setting rate requirements for Preferred Provider Organizations similar to those already in place for Health Maintenance Organizations.
