WASHINGTON -- Fall crops of lettuce, cilantro and arugula can be started from
seed but must be watered at least once a day in the heat of August to
survive and grow. These greens can be raised in patio and balcony pots. Use
containers at least 14 inches across. Thin out crowded seedlings carefully
when they reach a couple of inches high to allow remaining greens to grow.
Remove seedlings with scissors to avoid soil disturbance. Leave at least two
inches between the seedlings that are left. Thin again in two to three weeks
to allow four to six inches between maturing greens. A thin mulch of sand
will help maintain even moisture.
