The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
Silver dollar: To local groups who are working to ensure Carson City students don't start school tomorrow lacking the basic supplies, from pencils to healthy food. Soroptimist International and Platinum Plus Salon gathered supplies and delivered them in nice new backpacks to kids in need; Bauter & Holmes Dentistry has been collecting supplies and donations for months; and Food for Thought, which provides families with food over the weekend, is gearing up for another year of fighting hunger. All children deserve to start the school year with full backpacks and full tummies. Bless those who make it happen for each and every one of them.
Wooden nickel: A wooden nickel goes to the blockhead who cut down a maple tree at Seeliger Elementary School. The tree was one of more than three dozen transplanted from the Nevada Guard grounds after a solar energy project necessitated their removal. What started as an effort to keep Carson City just a little bit greener ended up in splinters for this one specimen. Shame on the vandal who perpetrated this senseless act.
Silver dollar: Carson City is losing a familiar face and beloved friend. Anyone who has had a lunch or dinner meeting at the Carson Nugget - and we are legion - know JoEllen Buckner, the banquet manager with the big smile. She's ending a 23-year career here and is moving with her husband to Arizona. We wish her well.
