Nevada Wolf Pack football home games will be broadcast in two languages this season.
The Wolf Pack announced Monday afternoon that Exitos 1550-AM in northern Nevada will broadcast Pack football home games in Spanish this season starting with the season opener Sept. 2 against Eastern Washington.
"This is a win-win situation for our entire community," Wolf Pack athletic director Cary Groth said.
Wolf Pack head coach Chris Ault was thinking of his football team.
"Hopefully they can help us go out and find some Zendejas kickers," joked Ault, referring to former Wolf Pack kickers Tony and Marty Zendejas in the 1980s. "It's our pleasure to have them (Exitos 1550-AM) be a part of our team."
Groth also unveiled Wolf Pack t-shirts that read, "una comunidad, un equipo" in keeping with the school's "one community, one Pack" marketing campaign.
"They will broadcast all home football games," Groth said, "and hopefully this will grow into other opportunities."
The Exitos 1550-AM broadcast team for Pack football will be Carlos Martinez and Miguel Mina. Martinez, who grew up a Wolf Pack fan in northern Nevada, will handle play-by-play while Mina, a former football player for National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City (UNAM), will be the analyst.
""Our number one sport is soccer," Mina said. "But our second most important sport is American football. It is played by all our major universities in Mexico. It is very, very important for our community."
Mina said there is a substantial Spanish-speaking audience for Wolf Pack football to tap into in Northern Nevada.
"We are born with the NFL and we are born with the Wolf Pack as part of our community," Mina said.
"It's important for our community to know that this team belongs to them also."
