Several students for the Carson City Chi Kwan Taekwondo school had outstanding performances at the 2010 Junior Olympics/US National taekwondo championships held in Orlando, Fla., from June 26- July 5.
More than 4,500 athletes competed in the event.
Varun Pandit was the only gold medal winner in the group, while Garrett Damico, Vidhi Pandit and Aanhya Clarkson were silver medalists. Clarkson actually won two silver medals.
Vidhi Pandit, Dillon Damico and Natalia Filson won bronze medals.
Grandmaster Chi Duong Saeed Mobaligh, accompanied the group.
Kiser faring well
on rodeo circuit
Cody Kiser, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Nevada, is in first place in the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association in the bareback division.
Kiser, who attended Dayton High School, is $1,300 ahead of his nearest competitor. Since Nevada doesn't have a rodeo program,
Kiser competes as an independent and made the college nationals last year.
Kiser is majoring in Geological and Civil Engineering. With local scholarships and loans he has been putting himself through school and attending all the rodeos he can on his own dime.
Gilbert-Ouma clash
set for Sept. 25
RENO - Former IBF Jr. middleweight champion, Kassim "The Dream" Ouma (26-7-1, 16 KOs), will take on Reno's Joey Gilbert (20-2, 15 KOs) for the vacant NABA middleweight title on Sept. 25 at the Grand Sierra.
The fight will be part of a main event put on by Let's Get It On Promotions.
Ouma is coming off of a unanimous decision loss to current NABO and NABF Jr. middleweight champion Vanes Martirosyan. Ouma has been eager to get back in the ring to earn another world title shot.
"I can't wait to get back into the ring in Reno." Says Ouma. "I am thankful for this opportunity. Boxing is my life and my passion."
Gilbert has an opportunity to position himself for a world title shot again. He has won three straight fights, two by knockout.
The winner of Gilbert vs. Ouma will earn a top-15 world ranking by the WBA, and will be eligible for an optional title defense by the champion, Germany's Felix Sturm.
Kemp wins annual
Best in Desert race
DAYTON - Chris Kemp finished first in Class 1500 and second overall, at the 2010 Best In The Desert Vegas to Reno race, which finished over the weekend in Dayton.
"With the Speed Technologies guys, I almost felt like I was cheating, this car is awesome," said Chris Kemp. "I couldn't have done it without this team, it was a whole team effort."
The #1543 Speed Technologies prepared and supported the Class 1500 car had a practically flawless race. Kemp started his fifth desert race 20th off the line behind both of the Herbst trucks.
After 219 miles of dust, they brought him in at Pit 6 for a quick fuel dump and got him back out on course before the Herbst truck, strategically putting him into clean air.
Once in the clean air, he started picking off cars and trucks and by Hawthorne he had the lead. They crossed the finish line at 9 hours and 20 minutes.
"This is for Chuck Dempsey," said Kemp at the finish line about his co-driver at the Silver State 300 race.
After an engine failure at Silver State 300, the car came to the Speed Technologies shop to get a full engine rebuild, transmission and converter, shock package and complete race prep to be ready for a successful run at the Vegas to Reno race.
WNC Golf Classic
set for Eagle Valley
The 13th annual Western Nevada College Golf Classic is set for 8 a.m. Sept. 17 at Eagle Valley golf course.
The cost for an individual player is $150, which includes tee prizes, a raffle, longest drive awards, closest to the hole and a barbecue. Individual players will be used to fill incomplete company teams.
Tee sponsorships, which includes fees for two golfers and an organization sign goes for $300. A business team sponsorship is $800, which includes four players and a tee sign.
A tournament sponsorship is $10,000 which includes 16 golfers, naming of the tournament, four tee signs and a banner. A greens fee and cart fee sponsorship costs $3,500 which includes 12 golfers, three tee signs and a banner. For more information on the tournament, call 445-3240.

lead APA divisions
Cues Yer Daddy holds a one-point lead over Big Dogs in the latest Mosconi Division standings of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolpalyers Association.
Casey Richards of Support Rackless Habits leads the 6-7 tier with 37 points. Daniel McRae of Rack Fink and Alex Gutierrez of Role Models are a point back at 36. Rachel Hurt of Cues Yer Daddy leads the 4-5 tier with 33 points, one better than Robert Matteson of Trouble Makers. There is a three-way tie for second place. Anthony Cup of Fun Tickets leads the 2-3 tier with 32 points, three ahead of Cari Kerr of Crowbar.
The fall session for the local 9-ball league starts on Sept. 1. New players, especially beginners are wanted.
