(Nevada Appeal Capitol Bureau) - Nevada has been awarded $7 million under the stimulus program to expand the state Housing Division's weatherization program.
Gov. Jim Gibbons said the division staff applied for the funding which he said will allow expansion of the program to some higher-income families. The original weatherization money was targeted to serve low income families.
"This grant will expand our program to serve more of our residents throughout the state," Gibbons said.
Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., said stimulus funding has already paid for weatherization projects at 4,000 Nevada homes. She said the added $7 million will expand the program to even more citizens.
"Once these improvements are in place, homeowners begin to see reductions right away in the amount of water and power they use and the proof comes when they see the savings on their bills each month," she said.
The money will specifically help install in-home energy monitors, photovoltaic systems, solar water heaters, heat pumps and residential wind turbines.
