A Carson City man was jailed early Saturday morning after he allegedly robbed a convenience store on Highway 50 East then barricaded himself in a nearby motel room.

Donald Lee Newbury, 39, a welder, was booked into the Carson City Jail at 1:30 a.m. on suspicion of felony robbery and misdemeanor failure to appear.

According to the arrest report, the clerk at the Jackson Market at the corner of Rand Avenue and Highway 50 East reported a man entered her store about 10:40 p.m., poured himself a cup of coffee, then approached the clerk and said, "This is a robbery and its no joke."

After the clerk gave the man the money, he left on foot.

When deputies arrived, a store manager provided them with a picture of the bandit from the surveillance footage. Upon providing a tenant at the Rand Motel with the pictures, deputies learned Newbury, who was staying in room 221, matched the description.

According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, deputies spotted Newbury through a motel room window drinking from a Jackson coffee cup and with money on a table. When Newbury saw officers, he allegedly barricaded himself in the bathroom.

Furlong said the SWAT team was called out and the other tenants evacuated. But as officers were preparing to enter the room, Newbury allegedly emerged and surrendered.

Investigators recovered the money from his room and the clothing he was allegedly wearing during the robbery.

Also recovered was the coffee cup, Newbury apparently shredded after spotting police, the report states.

His bail was set at $25,000.
