Giants, SS Tejada agree to 1-year deal

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The World Series champion San Francisco Giants have found their new shortstop, agreeing to terms with free agent Miguel Tejada on a $6.5 million, one-year contract Tuesday.

The deal is pending a physical. The Giants didn't expect to make a formal announcement until later this week at the earliest, depending on how soon Tejada could get to town for his physical.

Tejada told The Associated Press in the Dominican Republic that he had agreed to the deal worth $6.5 million.

Yankees, Jeter await next step

NEW YORK (AP) - With Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner expressing confidence the sides will work out an agreement, Derek Jeter and his longtime team awaited each other's next move after resuming contract negotiations.

Jeter and agent Casey Close met Tuesday in Tampa, Fla., with managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner, general manager Brian Cashman and team president Randy Levine.

No new offers were exchanged, a person familiar with the session said Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no details were announced.

Hank Steinbrenner said late Tuesday night: "I feel confident that Derek will remain with the Yankees, and my brother does, as well."

New York previously offered Jeter a $45 million, three-year contract. Going into Tuesday, the first meeting since Nov. 8, the All-Star shortstop had not made a formal proposal.

Report: Red Sox meet with Rays OF Carl Crawford

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox have reportedly met with free agent outfielder Carl Crawford.

A four-time All-Star, Crawford is one of the top players on the free agent market. He earned $10 million from the Tampa Bay Rays last season while hitting .307 with 47 stolen bases and career bests of 19 homers, 90 RBIs and 110 runs scored.

Padres agree to deal with OF Denorfia

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Padres have agreed to a one-year contract with outfielder Chris Denorfia.

Denorfia, signed as a minor league free agent last offseason, played in 99 games for the Padres in 2010. He hit .271 with nine homers and 36 RBIs. He made 72 starts, including 44 in center field, 15 in left and 13 in right.

Over parts of five major league seasons with Cincinnati, Oakland and the Padres, he has a .274 average with 12 homers and 55 RBIs.

San Diego announced the deal on Wednesday.
