DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Kyrie Irving scored a season-high 31 points and No. 1 Duke beat No. 6 Michigan State 84-79 on Wednesday night in the marquee matchup of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Nolan Smith added 17 points and Kyle Singler scored 15 for the Blue Devils (7-0). They shot 47 percent, turned 20 Michigan State turnovers into 28 points, used a 12-2 spurt midway through the second half to take a double-figure lead and held off the Spartans down the stretch by hitting 9 of 12 free throws in the final 1:15.
Korie Lucious scored 20 points and Draymond Green added 10 of his 16 in the final minute for Michigan State (5-2). The Spartans shot 49 percent, were held to one field goal during a critical 7-minute stretch that coincided with Duke's run but otherwise hung tight with the reigning national champions.
Duke won its 17th straight game dating to last season's national title run, claimed its 23rd straight victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium and ran its NCAA-best streak of nonconference wins at home to 81.
Mike Krzyzewski claimed the 875th victory of his Hall of Fame career to move one win behind Adolph Rupp, who's in third place on the all-time list.
No. 3 Pittsburgh 80, Duquesne 66
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ashton Gibbs scored 22 points and Gary McGhee wore down smaller Duquesne with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the first basketball game in the Consol Energy Center.
The 6-foot-11 McGhee was too tall and too strong for the Dukes, who played much of the game with only one starter taller than 6-5. McGhee had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half and finished with seven blocked shots, tying a school record held by many.
The Panthers (8-0), who came in with a nation's best rebounding advantage of 16.2 per game, outrebounded the Dukes 56-35.
Nasir Robinson added 14 points and 12 rebounds as Pitt beat its down-the-street rival for the 10th consecutive season - extending its domination of what is known as the City Game with its 29th victory in the last 32 games.
Bill Clark and Damian Saunders scored 20 points each for Duquesne (3-2), which shot 36.2 percent while being held 25 below its season scoring average of 91 points. Clark, guarded mostly by Robinson, didn't score until 3:12 remained in the first half and the Dukes down 15.
No. 14 Memphis 78, Arkansas St. 71, OT
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Will Barton scored 20 points and Memphis survived a scare.
Arkansas State got two quick baskets in the extra period to take a 69-65 lead. But Memphis (6-0) scored the next seven points to pull away and escape with its undefeated record intact.
Wesley Witherspoon had 12 points for the Tigers, while Joe Jackson and Antonio Barton had 10 apiece.
Daniel Bryant led the Red Wolves (1-6) with 16 points, including leading a second-half rally with 11 points.
They scored the last six points of regulation to send the game into overtime, as Memphis failed to score over the final 5 minutes.
UCF 57, No. 18 Florida 54
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Marcus Jordan scored 18 points and Keith Clanton hit two free throws in the final seconds for Central Florida.
The Gators lost to the Knights for the first time in 10 meetings and Michael Jordan's son had a lot to do with this one.
Jordan was 6 of 11 from the field and played tight defense, creating all kinds of problems for the Gators (5-2). He hit two free throws with 24 seconds remaining, putting the Knights (6-0) up 55-52.
Erving Walker and Boynton missed 3-pointers, and Clanton made two free throws that pretty much sealed it.
It was a signature win for first-year UCF coach Donnie Jones, who spent more than a decade on Billy Donovan's staff. The two exchanged a hug and a few words after the game. It dropped Donovan's record against his former assistants to 5-2, with the other loss coming to Arkansas' John Pelphrey.
No. 19 Texas 76, Lamar 55
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Freshman Cory Joseph had 16 points and nine rebounds and Texas ran its non-conference home winning streak to 23 straight.
Freshman Tristan Thompson had his second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Longhorns, who also got coach Rick Barnes his 300th victory in 13 seasons at Texas. Barnes was already the winningest coach in program history.
A 14-2 run by Texas (6-1) to open the second half put the Longhorns ahead by 21 and opened up what had been a sloppy game by both teams in the first half when they combined for 25 turnovers.
Kendrick Harris scored 13 points for Lamar (4-3).
Jordan Hamilton scored 16 points and Gary Johnson had 10 for the Longhorns.
No. 21 BYU 77, Creighton 65

Doug McDermott had 20 points and 12 rebounds to become the first Creighton freshman since 1988 to record a double-double. Antoine Young added 15 points and Darryl Ashford had 12 for the Bluejays (4-3).
The Cougars came to Omaha from the South Padre Island Invitational, where they needed double overtime to beat South Florida and a last-second shot by Fredette to beat Saint Mary's.
No. 22 Purdue 58, Virginia Tech 55, OT
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - JuJuan Johnson scored 29 points, including a go-ahead 15-footer with 1:27 left in overtime, and Purdue clinched the ACC/Big Ten Challenge for the Big Ten for the second straight season.
Johnson's basket with 9 seconds left in regulation forced overtime for the Boilermakers (6-1), coming off an 11-point loss to Richmond in the Chicago Invitational.
The Hokies (4-3), in their first game after a five-game road trip, trailed much of the game, used two short bursts in the second half to build small leads and then lost them. ACC scoring leader Malcolm Delaney missed 16 of 18 shots from the field and turned the ball over with the Hokies down two and 3.3 seconds left.
E'Twuan Moore added 14 points for the Boilermakers, 11 after halftime.
Jeff Allen led Virginia Tech with 14 points and Victor Davila had 12.
Purdue's win was the sixth in the matchups for the Big Ten, which lost the challenge to the ACC for the first 10 years of the series.

The Rebels led by 17 points at halftime and cruised in the second half, holding the Redbirds to 36 percent shooting from the field. The Rebels have held opponents to 35 percent shooting this season. Their man-to-man pressure defense forced Illinois State into 16 turnovers.
