Western Nevada Supply plays Santa to 100 kids

Western Nevada Supply, a family-owned and operated company based in Sparks has selected 100 children from Carson City to enjoy a holiday shopping spree to purchase much-needed items for themselves during its 13th annual Kids' Christmas event.

Each child is given $100 to spend, and the kids were selected through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada. This year's event will be at 8 a.m. Saturday at Walmart, 3200 Market St. in north Carson City.

Western Nevada Supply has hosted the Kids' Christmas shopping event since 1998 in lieu of purchasing customer gifts.

Since its inception, the Blue Team has provided more than 5,000 children throughout Northern Nevada, Idaho and California, where the company branches are based, with needed clothes and toys.

ESL needs volunteers

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada needs to recruit more tutors to join the 118 community volunteer tutors now teaching 210 students in five counties.

Fundraisers enable the program to purchase needed instructional materials to start 80 adults on its waiting list who are eager to learn to speak, read, write and understand English.

Toys for Tots Hotline now available

Families in need can call the Toys for Tots Hotline call-in number if they are looking for assistance for the holidays.

The number to call is 884-8697. Hours are from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday until Dec. 23.

Bargain book sale offered

The Friends of the Carson City Library will host a huge book sale at the Carson Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 8-11.

Shoppers can find bargain books for adults or children priced at $1 or less. It's also a great opportunity to stock up for the coming cold winter months.

Nutcracker will be 'All Jazz'd Up' this season

The Nutcracker Balley All Jazz'd Up will be presented by danceSpirit Performing Arts at 7 p.m. Dec. 18 and 1 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

The presentation is funded in part by Walmart, the National Endowment of the Arts and the Nevada Arts Council.

CVAA seeks exec. director

The Carson Valley Arts Council, a non-profit corporation, is seeking a creative and energetic executive director.

This part-time position requires attention to detail along with strong organizational skills to manage projects throughout the year. Writing skills are also a necessity, along with grant research/writing and marketing experience.

Responsibilities include building membership and donor base, oversight of programming and operations as well as building partnerships in the arts community.

DCHS lecture offered

The Douglas County Historical Society's December lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 in the downstairs meeting room of the Douglas County Museum & Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395, Gardnerville.

This month's lecturer will be Frank Ackerman, who will be talking about the Central Pacific Railroad and the influence the discovery of the Comstock had on it.

Ackerman came to Nevada in May 2005 as Chief of Operations and acting director at the Thunderbird Lodge Historic Site on Lake Tahoe. In October 2005 he became curator of education at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, and since January 2007 he also has served as acting museum director.

Holiday toy exhibit at the Dangberg Home Ranch

Nevada State Parks invites the public to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park for "Home Ranch for the Holidays," a special exhibit of historic toys, games and Christmas decorations from the 1860s through the 1940s.

The exhibit will be from noon to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the park, located at 1450 Highway 88, one-half mile south of the Carson Valley Swim Center. A map and further information can be found at parks.nv.gov/hr.htm or by calling 783-9417.

Highlights of the exhibit include an aluminum Christmas tree complete with a color wheel, the family's Christmas stockings hung on the mantle, and other Dangberg family holiday decorations.

Cost is $3 for adults and free for children under 13.
