LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police say they've arrested a 17-year-old gang member accused of spray-painting graffiti over prehistoric etchings at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada.

The teen wasn't identified because of his age. Police say he faces a felony charge of placing gang graffiti.

Police say the teenager permanently defaced federally protected Native American art scraped and ground into the rocks up to 1,000 years ago.

The graffiti was reported Dec. 2. It features the words "Red Rock 2010" and "Nevada has cronic" sprawled in maroon paint across several rock formations.

The teen was being held at Clark County Juvenile Hall.
