PREPS: Carson girls win 4th straight game

MORRO BAY, Calif. - Carson High's girls basketball team made it a clean sweep Saturday morning, knocking off Lompoc 44-36 on the final day of the Morro Bay Invitational.

Carson is now 4-2 entering Tuesday night's home game against Damonte Ranch.

"We had to be very physical again," coach Todd Ackerman said. "They let you go (play). I thought we played pretty well. We worked on some things. The four games were good for us.

"I think it will (give us confidence). hopefully we've learned how to be more physical. We had to be physical down there. I hope it will carry over and help us."

Carson led 24-14 at the half, as Eliza matley scored eight of her nine points in the second quarter. Lompoc, thanks to a couple of baskets in the closing minute, outscored Carson 22-20 in the second half.

Whitney Nash also scored nine for Carson, while Emily Collins was next with six.

Ackerman wasn't sure if he would have a different starting line-up for Tuesday. Elayna Shine aggravated a shoulder injury and Tiana McAllister-Daggs rolled her ankle against Lompoc.

WRESTLING

4 CHS WRESTLERS PLACE

ELK GROVE, Calif. - Four Carson High wrestlers - Patrick Craugh, Nico Garcia, Jordan Luhrs and Kyle Sharp - placd at Saturday's Elk Grove Invitational.

Carson left before the tournament was concluded, but coach Tim McCarthy estimated that the Senators probably finished in the middle of the 24-team event.

"It probably wasn't the most appropriate tournament," McCarthy said. "It was a little tough at vthis point of the season for our young team, but evcerybody was scrapping pretty hard."

Craugh finished second at 112, losing 11-2 in the finals. Craugh compiled a 3-1 record. At 160, Garcia went 4-1 and finished third. He won the third-place match 16-5. Garcia recorded two pins on the day.

Jordan Luhrs, the Senators' 145-pounder, finished sixth with a 2-3 record. He lost 16-5 in the fifth-plcae match. Kyle Sharp was seventh at 103 pounds, compiling a 3-1 record. Sharp lost his opener and came back to win three in a row.

JV WRESTLING

3 SENATORS GO UNDEFEATED

RENO - The Carson JV wrestling team had three first-place finishers at the McQueen JV tournament on Saturday.

Sammy Mercado at 112 pounds, Adan Ortega at 119 pounds and Sean Robles at 125 pounds all won their weight classes. Mercado and Ortega improve to 10-0 on the year. Robles in 9-1.

The Senators also had a pair of second-place finishers as Dominic Kinder at 112 and Riley Hutchings at 119 both lost in the finals to their teammates.

Placing fourth for Carson was Sklyar Schilling at 135 and Aaron Cowee at heavyweight.

Carson doesn't wrestle again until Jan. 8 at Spanish Springs.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR DUST DEVILS

WINNEMUCCA - The Dayton Dust Devils freshman girls basketball team learned a lot about themselves in a 53-9 defeat against Elko on Saturday.

The Dust Devils struggled to execute the offense early scoring only one first half point. However, instead of giving up the Dust Devils regrouped and refocused and played much better in the second half, according to coach Ben Halverson.

"We did a better job of running the offense," Halverson said. "We were more successful at getting the shots we wanted. It was a learning experience for us."

Ashley Sandy led Dayton with five points.

Dayton (1-1) plays Lowry at the four-day North Valleys tournament starting on Dec. 27.
