Supervisors to name local fishing pond after Baily

Carson City's urban fishing pond at Fuji Park could soon have a name.

The board of supervisors is set to act on a recommendation from the parks and recreation commission to name the new attraction the Baily Fishing Pond after Kevin C.K. Baily.

Baily has been a longtime advocate for the project and helped the department in a number of grant presentations. He also personally raised $24,600 in private donations for pond construction and maintenance activities.

The pond is now known as the Fuji Park Pond in the Nevada Department of Wildlife's state fishing regulations. If the board approves of the new name, it will be forwarded to NDOW to request a name change.

Supervisors also are scheduled to:

• Approve Charles Abowd as the liquor manager for Adele's.

• Approve Richard Estey as the liquor manager for Dotty's at 4320 S. Carson St.

• Take action on several purchasing and contracts items including the Saw Mill Canyon Pipeline and Water Delivery Project, and awarding a bid and expanding the scope of the Wastewater Reclamation Plant North Lift Pump Station improvements.

• Take action on several Public Works projects including an agreement between the city and state for operation, maintenance and repair of the Marlette Water System and the Stewart Water Treatment Plant, a temporary banner and sign ordinance, extension of a tentative industrial subdivision map for Arrowhead Business Park, and the sale of city property on Karin Drive.

• Take action on two Open Space Division items including the acquisition of about 419 acres of John Serpa property in the Carson River Canyon and the approval of a funding agreement and deed restriction for the property.

• Approve a conservation easement required for the transfer of Prison Hill and adjacent Carson River lands from the Bureau of Land Management.

• Accept the Humane Society of the United States' shelter evaluation report and ask staff to develop an action plan.

• Determine the appropriate method for filling the justice of the peace position which will be vacant in March when Judge Robey Willis retires.

Afternoon agenda:

• Supervisors and other city officials will break for lunch and gather at 2 p.m. at North Roop Street between William and Corbett streets for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, after which barriers will be removed and the Roop Street will officially open.

• The Carson City Board of Health will convene at 2:30 p.m. to discuss updates on services and activities within the Carson City Health and Human Services Department, hear a report on community health activities for HIV prevention, hear a presentation of the year's Public Health Preparedness activities, discuss and create a mission statement for the board, discuss and revise the draft of the board's health bylaws, and discuss a schedule for future board meetings.
