LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada's top Democrat wants private contractors hired by the state to verify the immigration status of their employees.
Secretary of State Ross Miller said that all companies in Nevada should use the federal E-Verify system to ensure they hire only employees who are allowed to work under immigration laws.
Miller asked the state Board of Examiners to require that private contractors hired by the state submit the names of their workers to E-Verify.
The federal system compares job applicants' personal information with federal records. A mismatch means the employee cannot legally be hired.
Miller says E-Verify is the only way to ensure employers are hiring documented workers.
