ComputerCorps is moving

ComputerCorps is moving from its east Carson City warehouse to a 40,000 square foot location at 550 Mallory Way.

The non-profit collects used computers and electronics, provides computer training and operates an outlet store.

For now, ComputerCorps will accept donations and service and recycle computers at the new location, but its training center, recruitment center, offices and outlet store will temporarily relocate to 2800 Arrowhead Dr., in a building donated by the Cubix Corporation's Al Fiegehen.

ComputerCorps President Ron Norton said Dennis Construction in Reno helped the organization secure the new location on Mallory, which will be remodeled for the office space, training center and outlet store over the next four months.

Norton said the organization has grown ever since Dwight Millard helped ComputerCorps start its operations in the late 1990s.

"We're just growing, we outgrew what we had," Norton said. "We've been up there for 10 years and we had an opportunity thanks to Dennis Banks Construction in Reno."

Both locations will be open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday. To contact ComputerCorps call 775-883-2323.

Canada company buys

Carson City food maker

An Ontario-based company has acquired Edner of Nevada, Inc., which produces nutrition bars in Carson City.

SunOpta Inc., took over the 104,000-square-foot operation last week. The company's subsidiary SunOpta Fruit Group Inc. will manage the location.

The company said the acquisition will, "extend the breadth of its healthy snack offerings via the introduction of innovative new products utilizing the capabilities that exist within Edner."

New company to start operations in 2011

Scougal Rubber Company announced it will mark the start of the New Year by beginning to manufacture product for the first time in its new facility in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.

The company recently moved its headquarters from Seattle to northern Nevada and is leasing 40,000 square feet in a building owned by a sister company, Dynamic Isolation Systems. The company is bringing 80 jobs to the region.

Scougal manufactures rubber and steel-reinforced bearing pads that are set under steel girders during bridge construction, while its sister company makes the large rubber pads used for seismic construction and retrofitting of buildings and bridges.

Jiffy Lube in Carson City bought

Waiala Investment Corp. purchased Jiffy Lube locations at 215 Prater Way and 2901 N. Carson St. in Carson City from the Hood Family Limited Partnership for a total of $2.5 million. Floyd Rowley of Colliers International represented the seller.

Area company announces promotion

The executive board of Production Pattern and Foundry announced this month that it has promoted Stephen L. Cochran to be its president.

Since its relocation from San Leandro, Calif., to the Carson City area in 2005, Production Pattern and Foundry has continued to be a full production casting foundry working exclusively in clean, versatile aluminum alloys.

Gas prices on the rise

Gas prices in Reno average $3.17, up a dime in the last month. Carson City averages $3.04. The state average of $3.07 is 10th highest in the country.

California is most expensive at $3.26.

GNCU scholarship program recognized nationally

Greater Nevada Credit Union's scholarship program was recently named one of the "Five Best Scholarships for Nevada Residents" by NewsMax, a national news media organization.

Since its scholarship program began in 2001, Greater Nevada has awarded $129,000 to 129 students.

Applications are provided to public high schools throughout northern Nevada every spring, and students planning to attend college or a trade school after graduation are encouraged to apply.

Winners are selected based on academic performance, school and community involvement, recommendations from school and community leaders, and financial need. Applicants must be Greater Nevada members or the child, spouse or parent of a member.

Judge: Wynn Las Vegas casino broke labor law

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A hearing officer says the Wynn Las Vegas casino-resort violated federal labor law when it fired a union leader last year.

The administrative law judge for the National Labor Relations Board said in a ruling filed this week that Wynn targeted dealer Ronda Larson because she was notably active in the Transportation Workers Union.

Larson was a longtime casino employee when she was fired in September 2009 after she helped organize for the union.

Wynn managers say Larson was terminated because she was rude and insubordinate. The company says it did not break any laws.

The ruling states Larson had not behaved inappropriately and that the casino was simply looking for an excuse to fire her. The officer ordered the company to give her back her job.

Washoe County home sales down in November

RENO (AP) - The Reno-Sparks Association of Realtors says Washoe County home sales in November were down 7 percent from October and 16 percent from November 2009. Last month, 389 existing single-family homes were sold.

The median sales price for an existing home in Washoe County was $169,000, down 3 percent from both last month and November 2009.

Ken Amundson of the Realtors association says the monthly numbers show a return to more normal sales patterns marked by decreasing sales activity during winter months.

He says year-over-year comparisons are still skewed by the presence of homebuyer incentives a year ago.
