School chief to receive annual review

Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes is set to receive his annual evaluation during Tuesday's school board meeting.

This will be the second evaluation for Stokes, who took over as superintendent in July 2008.

In his time as chief, the school district has seen record budget cuts and has made several changes, including moving to an outside food service provider this year.

Perhaps the year's most notable distinction, however, was in November when voters approved a 10-year rollover bond.

Last year, trustees deemed his performance as "very satisfactory, bordering on superior."

Stokes moved to Carson City with his wife, Keli, and four children from Hawthorne in 2001 to take the position of associate superintendent of education.

He replaced former superintendent Dr. Mary Pierczynski, who served in that position for seven years.

During Tuesday's meeting, school board members also will review the goals set for the superintendent last year and determine new ones for the year to come.

Last year's principal goal was to increase the graduation rate in the Carson City School District.

The goals were established after a meeting of Stokes with trustees Joanna Wilson and Steve Reynolds.

Increasing graduation rates was the No. 1 priority of six that also included: Making sure all schools achieve adequate yearly progress under the No Child Left Behind Act, implementing distance education; balancing the budget; determine any bond-related projects;

and continuing to build partnerships in the community.

Stokes also will present a "State of the District" address to give trustees an informational overview of matters concerning the school district.
