Change of Base: Yesterday there was a lively commotion at the Orsmby House among the help, over the rumor that Col. Fair had changed his headquarters to the Arlington. One of the bootblacks was so put out that he was closely watched by the proprietor to prevent sudden suicide.

100 YEARS AGO

The road to Lake Tahoe has remained open the entire winter, or at least to present date. The mail is taken to Glenbrook three times a week and there hasn't been a sleigh over the grade - very unusual for this time of year. It's good for the stage driver, but tough on the rancher.

70 YEARS AGO

The state highway department reports snow at a depth of over five feet at Donner. Chains are necessary. Echo Summit to Placerville is closed until further notice. Chains are required to Bishop. It is warned to take chains at any rate and put on when needed.

50 YEARS AGO

There was no Christmas spirit shown by vandals who demolished sanitary change houses and picnic facilities at Sand Harbor during the holidays, Park director William Hart reported today.
