Why shouldn't Nevada have state lottery?

Commentary: Let the board do what it was elected to do

After reading a second opinion piece in as many weeks advocating the placement of the proposed Nugget redevelopment project on the November ballot, I feel a response is necessary.

Guy Farmer: How not to deal with terrorists

I almost felt sorry for Vice President Joe Biden last Sunday as he tried to convince skeptical "Meet the Press" moderator David Gregory that the Obama administration is tough on international terrorism and terrorists. It was apparent that Gregory wasn't buying what Biden was selling, and I don't blame him.

Silver Dollars & wooden nickels: A week of silver all around the city

The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

Public plan would lower health costs

Commentary: The governor's sorry State of the State

It appears that Gov. Jim Gibbons has decided to blame Democrats, the feds and teacher unions for everything. The governor's State of the State message on Feb. 8 sounded more like campaign rhetoric than a plan for economic recovery.

Tax Tips by Kelly Bullis: Solar energy credits: Are we there yet?

Much has been said over the last few years, and more recently in the last tax law passed by Congress, about getting money back for upgrading your home or business to be more energy efficient.

William Creekbaum: Boomers face retirement

Just as they've revolutionized American culture, baby boomers are reinventing retirement. They are expected to live longer, play harder and - most telling of all - many are also planning to work in some way in their later years.

Pasta and shrimp made quick

Stash the menus and put the phone down. Ordering in isn't necessarily faster when you're tired or rushed to get dinner for two on the table.

White bean soup is a quick fix for a hearty meal

This soup is quick and easy and more than the sum of its parts. And to make it even better, it's inexpensive to prepare.

Citrus from the broiler

This dish is exactly what I imagine being served in midwinter at a fine country inn: classic American breakfast food made special by extra touches. It is a simple mixture of beautifully cut fruit, sugar and spice. The warm fruit has the best qualities of an old-fashioned broiled grapefruit, but with more style and flavor.

After reading Steve Neighbors' lengthy defense of the $80 million Carson Nugget redevelopment project in last Sunday's Appeal, I was left with an important question: What's the hurry?

Golf course under new ownership The Sunridge Golf Club is under new ownership.

Carol Perry: Wall Street recovery or rose-colored glasses?

Back in 2008, the market meltdown was tied directly to the U.S. real estate markets. Too many people taking out mortgages they could not afford. Too many brokers willing to bend the old rules to qualify these people for loans they should not be getting. Too many houses being built to keep up with the demand now that everyone who fogs a mirror can get a home loan.

Winter frittata, a one-dish brunch for a company

For the overworked cook looking to make an easy one-pan main course, you can't do better than a frittata.

Fall in love with blintzes

Rhubarb. Pie Plant. Fruit or vegetable? At least half my newer cookbooks don't list rhubarb in the index, and the ones that do often combine it with strawberries, or cook it until it's too soft for my taste. It is the first - and most anticipated - sign of spring in our garden.

Eating Lighter: Shells with Peas, Ricotta and Basil

4 servings I don't miss the fattiness of a cream sauce, but sometimes I miss the combination of a creamy dairy-based sauce with my pasta. When I do, I use part-skim ricotta cheese instead. It's not quite the same, but its long shelf life in the refrigerator makes it easy to keep on hand.

Olympics-inspired appetizer sports asparagus 'skis'

Get ready to hit the slopes. A mountain of soft white goat cheese paired with asparagus spear "skis" makes for a fine arranged salad reminiscent of Alpine skiing.

Healthy Plate: Express your love with feast of duck

When in comes to matters of the heart, a luxurious roast duck dinner can be as healthy as it is impressive.

Ten years ago, on Feb. 2, 2000, a vision became a reality. The Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center opened its doors to our community and the Northern Nevada region. Housed in the historic Adams House on Minnesota Street adjacent to the former Carson Tahoe Hospital campus, it was the perfect setting for a service that would come to be associated with the kinds of support cancer patients and families needed.

As far as we're concerned, the most egregious fouls committed during Sunday's Super Bowl will involve tortilla chips and melted cheese.

Crispy seafood without the fat

Seafood dishes can be a boon for healthy eating, that is, unless you include fried fish in the mix. If you want to keep the crunch of fried without crashing your diet, you can still make crispy seafood part of a healthy meal.

Braised ribs with island style

Beef short ribs are one of the most flavorful cuts of beef. Long, slow cooking produces meltingly tender meat that almost falls off the bone.
