Carson GOP hosts Lincoln Day Dinner

Former Gov. Robert List will be the featured speaker at the Carson City Republican Party's Lincoln Day Dinner, at 7 p.m. Feb. 12, at the Carson Nugget. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner buffet at 7 p.m. A VIP Reception at the Governor's Mansion is scheduled from 5-6 p.m.

Other event activities, for a small donation, will include having a picture taken with Gov. Jim Gibbons, Congressman Dean Heller or a favorite candidate. The silent auction will offer some items to bid on along with William Furs selection of garments and leather items.

NDOT seeks input on wind warning system

The Nevada Department of Transportation is seeking public input on the wind closure notification system through Washoe Valley.

Winds are frequently high in the area. In the past 16 years, approximately 30 high-profile vehicles such as commercial trucks, RVs, campers, buses and truck-trailers have crashed in the valley because of severe winds.

NDOT has had a wind warning system in place since the early 1980s to prohibit high-profile vehicles during high winds. That system was updated in 1996, but the department is now evaluating new technologies that may improve the system. A study will determine whether the present system needs to be updated, and also evaluate the best high-wind warning system for the new Interstate 580 freeway being built between Mt. Rose Highway and north Washoe Valley.

"This study will help us continually keep abreast of any technological advancements and ensure that we have the most effective wind-warning system for the safety and convenience of everyone traveling in Washoe Valley," NDOT District Engineer Thor Dyson said.

Drivers can log onto www.nevadadot.com/wind before March 31 to take a brief survey and provide feedback.

Recreational trails grant funds available

The Federal Highway Administration grant program administered by Nevada Division of State Parks is accepting until March 31 pre-applications for the 2010 round of recreation trails projects.

The amount of funding for recreational trail construction and improvements is expected to be about $1.3 million. Federal, state, city and county governments, special governmental districts, organizations and private individuals are potentially eligible for match-based grants offered through the program.

Eligible projects include motorized and non-motorized trail projects for new construction, maintenance and trail-related facilities. Trail education projects also are eligible. The maximum amount available per project is $200,000 for non-motorized. There is no cap for motorized trail projects and the minimum amount awarded to projects is $4,000.

Sunset Rotary hosts Valentine's dinner

The Carson City Sunset Rotary Club's annual Valentine's dinner and silent auction are set for Feb. 13 at the Plaza Convention Center, 211 E. 9th St.

No-host cocktail hour and photos are from 6-7 p.m., with dinner at 7 pm. and dancing from 8-11 p.m. Tickets for the three-course dinner are $35. Tickets are available at the Plaza Hotel front desk.

The silent auction will include trips, gift baskets, golf, dinners, art and more. A $20 raffle ticket gives participants a chance to win a ready-made wine cellar - 100 bottles of boutique wines. There will be two additional prizes of on one case of wine each.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Food for Thought's 2010 summer meal program, Court Appointed Special Advocates and the 3rd Grade Dictionary Program.
