Douglas wins, sets up second-place showdown with Carson on Friday

The Douglas boys basketball team rode a strong defensive effort to a 76-39 win over South Tahoe in Minden Tuesday night.

Douglas held South Tahoe to just 15 points in the second half and didn't allow a field goal over the final 10 minutes of the game.

On the other end, the Tigers got balanced scoring from throughout their lineup with freshman Hunter Myers (17 points), senior Brett Anderson (16) and senior Luis Pina-Duarte (11) all finishing in double-figures scoring.

Yerington 65, Dayton 56

The Dust Devils saw a three-point halftime lead vanish in the third quarter as the Lions outscored them 18-8 en route to the loss.

Dayton (3-7 Northern 3A) was led by Dylan Taylor with 22 points and Jake Koch with 15.

Virginia City 79, Excel Christian 44

The Muckers coasted to an easy road win behind a 22-point effort by Zach Shell.

Virginia City, which also got 12 points from Hunter Redman, improved to 16-7 overall and 11-3 in league with two regular-season games remaining.

Girls basketball

Douglas 46, South Tahoe 25

A solid start and an even better second half helped the Tigers get past the Vikings in Minden.

The Tigers outscored the Vikings 11-2 the third quarter and used a 17-1 run to put the game effectively out of reach.

The win moved Douglas within one victory - or one loss from both Fallon and Damonte Ranch - of clinching a playoff spot.

Sophomore Tia Lyons led the Tigers with 12 points, Alex Laing, Susie Whie and Ne'Jae Jackson each had six.

For Tahoe, Alexis Nunes-Fenley had a game-high 14 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter.

Dayton 47, Yerington 35

The Dust Devils were able to pull even in Northern 3A play (5-5) with the wire-to-wire win.

Kathy Arias led the Dust Devils with 14 points, while Aundria Pluck added 11 and Taylor Hill had eight.

JV girls

Carson 56, Fallon 6

The Senators improved their record to 22-2 and 13-0 in conference as they defeated Fallon at the Morse Burley Gym.

The Senators were led by a stingy defense, domination of the boards and the three point shooting of Kaitlyn Holmes and Morgan Kleine.

Freshman boys

Carson 51, Fallon 24

The Senators led wire to wire with Rafe King pacing them with 13 points.

Jay Lanuza added 10 points, Sage Smith had eight and Javier Garcia finished with six.
