Revised highway project on view tonight

A revised Carson City Freeway Landscape Project will be presented to the Carson City Regional Transportation Commission today.

"The images have been modified based on the public comments the city received at the public information meeting on Jan. 19," said Park Planner Vern Krahn.

"The biggest changes are at the College Parkway Interchange with the addition of a mine head structure between the freeway bridges, and at Northgate and Emerson grade separations with the addition of images from the Sam Davis Ranch," he said.

Carson City's History in Motion is a plan to blend landscape, art and history into the six interchanges and grade separations of the north leg of the Carson City Freeway. Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides was heavily involved in the project.

The themed idea builds on the Nevada Department of Transportation's vision for the entire Highway 395 corridor, which is intended to celebrate Carson City's history through motion and travel.

Work could start in early 2011 and is expected to take about a year.

Carson City received about $2.2 million for improvements to the freeway corridor with $1.7 million secured through federal funding. The city also received $500,000 through the Nevada Department of Transportation's Community Match Program.

Final design could be completed by October, with the project expected to go to bid in December.

Those who have not yet seen the designs or those who want to see the changes that have been made, are invited to attend the meeting.

The RTC meeting starts immediately following the 5:30 p.m. Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting in the Sierra Room of the Community Center.
