'Nunsensations' in Sin City

"Nunsensations: Viva Las Vegas," opens Friday, Feb. 19 at Brewery Arts Center's Black Box Theater, 449 W. King St., Carson City, promising an evening of fun and laughter.

Presented by BAC's Performing Arts Collaborative, and directed and choreographed by Steven Meyer, "Nunsensations," is the story of five nuns from Hoboken, N.J., who are offered $10,000 if they take their show to Las Vegas.

"Mother Superior of course, is upset because the sisters are going to Sin City," Meyer said. "But when you have five nuns in habits in Vegas, you can just imagine where this goes."

The audience will be treated to the sisters strutting their stuff in The Pump Room high atop The Mystique Hotel, decked out in feathers, headdresses and more.

"All costumes are worn over their habits," Meyer said. "The audience, I promise, will laugh through the entire evening and will most likely leave whistling a show tune."

Mistress of ceremonies is long-time theater performer and supporter, Maise Jesse.

The five main characters are played by Andie Anderson, Susan Benefield, Catherine Cook, Michon Chandler-Douglas and Karen Chandler. Anderson also serves as company manager and Chandler as artistic director.

Corey Stockton is stage director and assistant show manager.

"With community theater, you see us wearing many hats," Meyer said. "And these are amazing, super talented people."

Meyer, who has an extensive performance background and who is also with the Nevada Opera Association, has found his role as director and choreographer to be a great learning experience.

"Directing is a whole new realm, I've been given a great opportunity and had great help," he said. "We staged this show on a very tight budget," Meyer said. "But it has been so collaborative, everyone has a vested interest and works together so well.

"I'm very proud of what we've accomplished."

Proceeds from tickets sales will be used to fund future BAC performances. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19, 20, 26 and 27 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21. The Feb. 28 gala is sold out.
