An important thing happened last week when Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., said he would not run for a third term because "things are broken in this country ... the system is not working." No kidding. There is no cooperation, no compromise, no civility in Washington. Besides Dems, Republicans and Independents, we now have the "Teas" and Whigs. Just give us someone who wants to help all of us, not just themselves and lobbyists. Dream on...

Deana Hoover's one woman show, "Humanus Natura," will be in the Backseat Gallery at Comma Coffee in March (with a reception for the artist from 5-7 p.m. March 3). The public is invited (883-5789). Judie Hartwick has just published a book, "Some Called Her Lizzie," and recently had a book signing at Borders. For copies and information, please call her at 887-0726. Exciting.

Suzie Lusich says that Michelle and Rick Encinas have opened a new salon, "Island Tan" on Clearview Drive. She says it's the best tanning place she's ever been to ... lots of tender loving care. The Dakota Organization is currently presenting "The Odd Couple" at the CVIC Hall in Minden (call 265-2942 for tickets and information). It's always fun to see Oscar and Felix duke it out. And "Nunsensations," is currently running at the Brewery Arts Center (883-1976). The nuns are at it again with their Las Vegas tomfoolery. There's a matinee today at 2 p.m., and next Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to catch up with their antics.

A quote from Michael Pollard: "Eventually the sun will burn out and they will still be working on the Ormsby House."

Bits and pieces: We hope you're enjoying the Olympics, even if they are delayed and interrupted with commercials. M would never have made the Olympic team ... she burned out on the bunny hill (got caught in the rope tow).

A very happy birthday to Kathy Thompson; and Ed Cordisco wondered why his name wasn't in the paper more often. Probably because you have too many girlfriends, instead of just Carolyn, (Ed's lovely wife, Jennie, is very patient).
With all the hoopla over the governor's state of the state, and the financial fiasco we're in, you'll notice he did not mention the drain of illegal aliens on our economy (notice we said "illegal," not people who have the right to be here). Where do you stand on that, sir?

Please say your prayers during this Lenten season for Andy Harvey's sister, Nan Harvey. She is in a California hospital trying to overcome a terrible bout with pneumonia. Nan has had many challenges in her lifetime, with Down Syndrome being at the front of them, but has lived happily and successfully and brought joy to her family and others. We send Nan and her family our best. Remember, especially during Lent, take time to take stock of your life and pray for everyone who needs a prayer.

Since it's Lent, we thought you could use a few definitions off the Internet: "Amen ... the only part of a prayer everyone knows. Bulletin ... your receipt for attending church. Jesuits ... an order of priests known for their ability to find colleges with good basketball teams. Justice ... when kids have kids of their own. Magi ... the most famous trio to attend a baby shower. Pew ... a medieval torture device still found in many churches. Ushers ... the only people in church who don't know the seating capacity of a pew." Amen.
