PREP ROUNDUP: Carson's Schlager moves onto state wrestling finals

Carson High's Nick Schlager continued his red-hot wrestling Friday at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, winning two matches and advancing to the 4A state finals.

Carson High still has six of its seven wrestlers alive entering the second day of the event which starts at 11 a.m. today. The finals are set for 5 p.m.

The only first-day casualty was heavyweight Justin Barlow, who lost his opening match to Las Vegas High's Austin Woo and then suffered an injury default loss to Donald Grazzini of Spring Valley in his second match.

Schlager, who has only lost three times this season, defeated Chad Orum of Foothill and then pinned Paul Educate. He will meet Colby Garrison of Cimmaron Memorial in the finals.

"He was at the top of his game," Carter said. "He was very meticulous. He did what he wanted to do when he wanted to do it. We used some bulletin board material. The guy was talking about how he was going to be in the finals against Garrison. Of course we used that."

Junior Valladares, Carson's next-best shot at a medal, split two matches. He pinned Andy Villagomez in the first round and then lost a controversial 8-6 overtime decision to Bishop Gorman's Johnny Field.

Carter felt that Valladares should have won in regulation.

"He had the guy taken down in the third period, right at the end of it" Carter said. "I don't know if the refs knew how much time was left. It was loud. There was a lot of noise."

Nico Garcia, Carson's young 145-pounder, went 1-1. He won by forfeit when his first opponent, Jerome Washington of Del Sol, failed to make weight. Garcia ran into Ray Waters in the semis and suffered a first-round pin.

Ricky Ugarte (119) also went 1-1, pinning Bonanza's Billy Wosnick in his opening match and then losing to Colin Merkley of Fallon 10-2.

Luke Carter, who lost by a point in last week's regional finals, suffered a one-point loss. 7-6, in his only match of the day against Johnathan Hales.

"The official missed a locked hands call that would have tied the match," Paul Carter said.

Carter will face Reed's Broc Westlake today, Carter will need to win twice today to reach the third-place match, which is the best he can do.

Craugh lost 8-2 to Bronson Ashijan, and he'll have to win a couple of matches today to medal. He'll face Willie McDonald of Bishop Manogue in his first match today.

According to Paul Carter, Barlow was winning his consolation match when he got taken down. Carter said Barlow was incoherent for a minute or so. He was taken to a local hospital.

HAWTHORNE 74, VIRGINIA CITY 55

Andy Gattrell scored 20 of his game-high 32 points in the second half to spark Hawthorne to a win over the Muckers in Elko.

Virginia City finished the season 19-9.

The Muckers led 22-12 after one and 32-29 at the intermission. Hawthorne went to a zone in the second half, and the Muckers couldn't knock down enough shots.

"Our defense collapsed a bit," Virginia City coach Deny Dotson said. "They went to a zone and we went cold. Teams have been manning us all year. Somebody decided to play zone and we couldn't buy a basket."

Colt Dotson led the Muckers with 17 points and Zach Shell added 15.

Northern 1A regional girls playoffs

Virginia City 62, Owyhee 43

After overcoming some early foul trouble, the Muckers eased into a 13-point third quarter lead and never looked back at Elko.

Virginia City saw some of its best players in foul trouble in the first quarter. Taylor Parsons started off with the hot hand as she scored 12 first-quarter points, but had to sit in the later portion due to foul trouble.

With the stars sitting, Owyhee found an opening and got within 20-15 after one quarter.

But the Muckers regained their composure and stretched the lead to 10 at the half.

Parsons finished with 15 points, while Gigi Glogovac led the team with 25 points.

The Muckers will face McDermitt at noon today for the regional title. Both teams are guaranteed a spot in next week's state tournament at Lawlor Events Center.

Northern 3A regional girls playoffs

Spring Creek 57, Dayton 19

The Dust Devils couldn't things going against the Spartans in Winnemucca from the onset as they went scoreless in the first half and trailed 33-0.

They settled down in the second half, but the hole was too much.

Kathy Arias led the Dust Devils with six points, all of which were scored in the fourth quarter.

They still have a shot to earn a state tournament berth, though. They face Truckee at noon today in Winnemucca in the third place game.
