Tigersharks fare well in Minden meet

The Carson Tigersharks swim team fared well at the Douglas Dolfins St. Valentine meet at the Carson Valley Swim Center in Minden.

More than 350 swimmers from Northern Nevada and California attended the event, including more than 30 of the Tigersharks top swimmers.

Kaly Bronco and Kelsey Bradley led the 9-10 year old girls division for the Tigersharks. Bradley placed second in the 100-yard butterfly, second in the 200 yard individual medley, third in the 100-yard individual medley and third in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle.

Bronco achieved a personal best and placed third in the 100-yard backstroke.

Charlee Bradley and Stella Carroll competed in the 11-12 year old girl's age group. Bradley placed third overall in the 50 and 100-yard backstroke while Carroll placed third in the 400 IM.

Abby Pittman shined in the 13-14 year old girls distance races placing second in the 500-yard freestyle and third in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle events.

Jamie Showalter led the 15 and over girls' team, placing second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 50-yard free.

Alex Brown, Tim Grunert and Albert Reed dominated the 15 and over boys division.

Brown placed first in the 100-yard butterfly, and second in the 50 freestyle and 100 back, and third in the 100 free. Grunert placed first in the 100 breast, second in the 200 IM and third in the 200 breast. Albert placed third overall in the 200 free.

Men's club looking

for members

The Silver Oak Golf Men's Club is now accepting membership applications for 2010.

All tournaments will be on Sunday mornings at the Silver Oak Golf Course starting March 21and continuing each week until Oct. 17, 2010.

There will be an awards banquet for all members following the final tournament date. The initial dues are $55, which includes membership into the NNGA and a GHIN handicap number, which will be established for posting individual scores. Other annual membership benefits include a weekend greens fee of only $45 with a weekday greens fee of $35.

In addition, members will receive discounts in the golf shop and a 20% discount on food and beverage in the Cadillac Bar & Grill Restaurant.

All tournaments are handicapped and will be flighted so that everyone has a fair chance to place in prize money each week.

Eight foul shooters

win district titles

The District competition of the Knights of Columbus Free-Throw Championship was held in Gardnerville last weekend with eight local shooters being crowned champions.

Derek Schafer was the 10-year-old boys champion and Jenae Steele was the 10-year-old girls champion. In the 11-year-old bracket Henry Loos was the boys champion and Brianna Alvarado was the girls champion.

Julian Alvarado and Arlette Mariscal were the 12-year-old winners. Kyle Steele was the and Alexandria Cotsonis were the 13-year-old winners.

All of the district winners reached the district tournament by qualifying at the Carson City Knights of Columbus Council #4781 tourney Jan. 29 at Carson Middle School.

Garrett Schafer was the Carson 13-year-old champion, while Andy Cooper was the 14-year-old champ. Both finished out of the money at the district event.

Dukek, Ross roll

perfect games

Josh Dukek bowling on the Old Time Classic Bowling League bowled a 300 and a 751 series back on Feb. 8 at Carson Lanes.

On Feb. 18th, James Ross rolled a 300 game in the Thursday Men's Trio League at Gold Dust West.

Phil Zeddies rolled a 284 and Ray Ferguson had a 279.

Carson Force wins

Carson Force won three straight games to capture the title at the XtremeHoops Tournament in Sacramento on Feb. 20.

Carson knocked off Napa 46-28 in the finals. TIn their first game, Carson Force defeated the Carson Valley White team 34-28, and followed that up with a 28-20 win over Xtreme Hoops, the host squad.

Scratch Masters

retains lead

The Scratch Masters remained in first place in the Comstock Division 63 of the American Poolplayers Association.

Scratch Masters has 528 points, 39 ahead of Twisted Stix.

Twisted Stix player Kirsten Kehe leads the 4-5 tier with 26 points, five better than Donald Smart Jr. of Tommy's and eight better than John Vecchiarelli of 9-Spoke. The Scratch Master duo of Don Allred and Frederick Osterhagen are tied for the top spot in the 6-9 tier with 18 points. James Panos of Scratch Masters and Santos Meza of Tommy's are tied for the lead in the 1-3 tier with 16 points apiece. Richard baker of Scratch Masters and Gloria Rodriguez of Twisted Stix are tied with 15 points, one off the lead.

In the Mosconi Division (263), the Big Dogs, Role Models and Trouble Makers are tied for first with 25 points apiece.

Casey Richards of Support Rackless Habits leads the 4-5 tier with 28 points. Kim Dandos of Twisted Attitudes and William Kenson of Trouble Makers are tied for second with 14. Alex Gutierrez of Role Models leads the 6-7 tier with 24 points and David Giovacchini is second with 20 points. William Bollman of Trouble Makers and Jason Agnew of Support Rackless Habits are tied for the lead in the 2-3 tier with 14 points each.

Fasiang wins junior

Hannah Fasiang, a Carson High freshman, won the junior women's title at the Alpine Meadows Telemark Freeskiing Junior Championship last weekend.

It's the second straight year Fasiang won the title.

Fritz Steinle also competed in the event, but was eliminated after the preliminary round.

Western Nevada Wildcats

win youth tourney

The Western Nevada Wildcats 14-and-under travel baseball team won a tournament last weekend in Sacramento.

Western Nevada knocked off the Folsom Flames 3-1 in the finals thanks to the pitching of Jace Zampirro and Gehrig Tucker.

The Wildcats led 3-0 entering the seventh. The Flames broke through for a run and then had runners on first and third before Tucker quashed the rally by gettin g the last two outs on groundballs.

Thomsen had a run-scoring triple and Luke Mahr added a triple.

To reach the finals, the Wildcats knocked off the NorCal Devils 7-3, Sutter Cut 10-3 and NorCal Baseball 14-6.

In Saturday's opener against the Devils, Cody Schmidlin allowed only three hits in 4.2 innings 4.2 innings of 3-hit pitching. In the win over Sutter Cut, Chase Blueberg held Sutter Cut hitless for the first 5.1 innings before pitch count forced him out. Blueberg and Tucker each finished with three hits, while Thomsen and Zack Harjes added two hits. Tim Lichty contributed a bases-clearing triple.

In Sunday's semifinal, Thomsen went 3-for-4 and scored four runs while Tucker went 1-for-2 and scored three runs. Austin Ackerson went four innings to pick up the win.
