Special session: First morning meeting aborted: No governor

The first morning meeting between legislative leaders and the governor was aborted after just 15 minutes today.

Despite statements Friday night when the session shut down that all parties would be reviewing a proposed compromise plan this morning, no one from the governor's office showed up.

Minority Leader Heidi Gansert, R-Reno, crossed from the Legislature to the governor's office inthe capitol a short time before that meeting was to begin at 9 a.m. and was also absent from the so-called "core" meeting in Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley's office.

After a short closed-door discussion, Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, and Senate Minority Leader bill Raggio, R-Reno, went back to their own offices.

When they adjourned Friday night just before 9 p.m., all parties were optimistic they were close to reaching a deal that would resolve the state's budget crisis and shut down the 26th Special Sesison of the Nevada Legislature.

The aborted meeting clouded that optimism but members of the governor's staff showed up 30 minutes later to talk with Buckley.
