WNC NEWS & NOTES: Construction teams finish strong at competition

Two teams of Western Nevada College construction management students made a good showing at the Associated School of Construction Regional Competition and Conference in Reno earlier this month. The teams spent two days in a cloistered room, applying their classroom skills and developing presentations that solve real construction management problems.

WNC's Heavy Civil category team, Curtiss Elliott, Cody Cummings, Ryan Anderson, Adam Loomis, Tom Hunt, Bryan Forster, and alternates Steven Forster and Cassandra Noll, finished in fifth place. The team's assignment was to bid, schedule and perform risk assessment for an airport runway safety improvement project.

The Commercial category team of Randy Contreras, David McGarry, Alex Jares, Cory Jares, Scott Etichison and Josh Etichison placed in the top 10 for their building construction project plan.

Thirteen schools, including California State Polytechnic University, California State University, Oregon State University and Montana State University, participated in the competition.

"Performing as well as we did alongside these schools proves that the WNC Construction Management program has an opportunity become one of the best programs in the country," Elliott said.

Photo essay contest entries wanted

WNC seeks entries for a photo essay contest featuring "Rhythms of our Community." Amateur photographers are invited to submit photos taken in Northern Nevada that depict a clear theme of rhythm and diversity. Submissions will be part of a social documentary project and displayed on the Carson City campus from May 10-15. Grand Prize is a three-credit course scholarship and a $100 WNC bookstore gift card. Additional prizes will be awarded for second place and "People's Choice."

To enter, submit a series of four to six photos, 4x6 to 8x10, each and mounted on quarter-inch poster board; typed captions for each photo; photographer's name; and contact information to Western Nevada College, Attn. Rotary Club scholarship available

For many students, scholarships are critical to helping them achieve their college goals. The Carson City Rotary Club Scholarsteps Scholarship provides as much as $12,000 during four years to support a local student in pursuit of a college degree. The deadline to apply for the fall 2010 Scholarsteps scholarship is Thursday, April 1.

Carson residents attending or planning to pursue a degree at WNC, as well as those who plan to attend or transfer to another Nevada college to complete a baccalaureate degree, are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be full-time students taking 12 credits or more per semester, maintain a 3.0 (B) or better grade point average and have declared a major or degree program of study. Applicants also must provide a personal statement addressing educational and career goals, community involvement or service to the community, and financial need.

Navy chaplain to talk about Iraq War
