STOCKTON, Calif. -- Chris Garcia and Shaun Kort teamed up to halt the Nevada Wolf Pack baseball team's first brief two-game losing streak of the year on Sunday.
Garcia pitched seven strong innings and Kort drove in five runs as the Wolf Pack trounced the Pacific Tigers, 10-3, at Klein Family Field.
The Wolf Pack, which had lost three of its last four games, including two games on Saturday to Pacific, is now 4-3 on the young season. The 4-3 start is the Pack's best after seven games since they were also 4-3 in 2005.
Garcia, who was 4-6 last year with a 6.02 earned run average, has now allowed just seven hits and one run over 10 innings and his first two appearances this year. The Reed High graduate allowed just five hits and a run and struck out seven without walking a hitter against the Tigers.
The 22-year-old Garcia, just 6-11 over his first two seasons at Nevada, is now 1-0 this year. Garcia is now a senior after spending his freshman year at Feather River College and his sophomore and junior years at Nevada.
It was Kort who gave Garcia a lead even before the left-hander took the mound. Kort blasted a two-out homer in the top of the first -- his second of the season -- to give the Pack a 1-0 lead.
A single by Joe Kohan and a RBI double by Ronnie Mitchell gave the Pack a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Westley Moss singled, stole second and went to third on a bunt by Kort in the third inning. Former Western Nevada standout Brian Barnett then singled home Moss for a 3-0 lead.
The Pack then scored twice in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. Nick Leid homered and Moss drove home Mitchell with a single for the two runs.
A two-run double by Kort and a run-scoring single by Barnett broke the game open in the sixth as the Pack scored three times to take an 8-0 lead for Garcia.
The Pack's final two runs came across on a two-run single by Kort in the eighth.
Kort, a senior, is now hitting .400 (10-for-25) this season with 11 RBI. Kort, who has two homers this year after hitting just four all last season in 213 at-bats, was 6-for-11 in the three games at Pacific this weekend.
The Pack was able to overcome hitting into four double plays against Pacific thanks to Garcia and a 16-hit attack. Four Pack players -- Moss, Kort, Leid and Mitchell -- each had three hits.
Leid is now hitting .500 (6-for-12) this year with four RBI. The junior hit just .218 last year for the Pack with three RBI in 78 at-bats.
Carson City native Jesse Rasner pitched the eighth inning for the Pack, allowing a hit and a run.
The Wolf Pack is now 15-16 against Pacific over the past 10 seasons (2001-10). In the previous 10 seasons (1991-2000), the Pack went 42-5 against the Tigers. At one point, from 1992 to 1997, the Pack won 20 games in a row against Pacific. The two teams will not meet again this year.
The Wolf Pack will play at UC Davis today (2 p.m.) in Davis, Calif.
