Attorney appointed chairman of court reporters panel

Carson City attorney Severin "Sev" A. Carlson was elected last month to chair the five-member Nevada Certified Court Reporters Board for 2010.

Carlson was appointed to the board in 2007 by Gov. Jim Gibbons. He is an attorney for Kaempfer Crowell Renshaw Gronauer and Fiorentino and works out of the firm's Carson City office.

The court reporting board, which is comprised of three court reporters, an attorney and a member of the public, oversees the practice of court reporting in the state. It was established by the Legislature and reports to the governor.

Sierra Nevada Media Group employee taking new role

Lynette Cameron will serve as the Sierra Nevada Media Group's director of audience engagement and marketing, the company announced Thursday.

Cameron, who has served as the company's regional market development director since 2006, will now focus her efforts on growing print, direct mail, Web and e-mail audiences.

"I think it's only natural that we being to merge our print marketing and online marketing efforts and really what we're trying to do is deliver the best products and services to our customers that we can," Cameron said.

She also worked in similar positions for newspapers in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

"This is a natural progression for our company, putting additional emphasis on building print paid circulation, expanding databases, and coordinating efforts to increase Web site visitors," said Scott McElhaney, the general manager of the media group.

The Nevada Appeal is among seven regional newspapers that belong to the Sierra Nevada Media Group, which is owned by Carson City-based Swift Communications.

NBC Breakfast meeting planned

Nevada Business Connections, a business recruitment company based in Carson City, will hold its monthly breakfast meeting 8-9 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Carson Nugget Casino, 507 N. Carson St.

The two guest speakers are Glen Atkinson, economics professor emeritus at the University of Nevada, Reno, who will address the history of the Nevada economy; and Tammy Westergard, deputy manager of the Carson City Office of Business Development, who will address the redevelopment project.

Doors open at 7:30 a.m. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for guests.

Forum on job and economic growth

The USDA Rural Development office in Nevada is inviting members of the business, government, education and economic development communities to a forum on jobs and economic growth on Jan. 21.

The event starts at 1 p.m. inside Marlette Hall of the Cedar Building at Western Nevada College, 2201 West College Parkway.

Brian Palmer, vice president of GE Energy in Minden, will give the keynote address.

Young professionals hosting mixer speed networking event

The Carson City Young Business Professionals will hold a mixer at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at Red's Old 395 Grill, 1055 South Carson St. It's a speed networking event and costs $5.

Energy efficiency training for businesses

The Small Business Development Center at the University of Nevada, Reno is offering monthly seminars to Northern Nevada businesses on ways to reduce energy use to lower costs.

The seminars are free and take place every third Thursday of the month at the NV Energy Building in south Reno,

Businesses can save up to $30,000 per year by reducing their energy consumption by 30 percent, according to the university.

The seminars are open to business owners and managers as well as property owners that lease space to businesses.

This month's seminar is at 8 a.m. Jan. 21 in room B-7 of the NV Energy Building at 6100 Neil Rd., in Reno. A continental breakfast will be served.
